The road to ‘Mortal Kombat II‘ was a long one. The sequel to the 2021 reboot spent years in development, cycling through multiple delays before Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema landed on a final theatrical release date. For a franchise built on endurance, patience, and the art of the comeback, the wait somehow felt appropriate.

When the film finally arrived in theaters, it did so with some serious momentum behind it. Directed again by Simon McQuoid and opening across 3,503 theaters, the sequel debuted to a $38.5 million domestic opening weekend. That was not just a strong number on its own. It marked the biggest domestic debut in the franchise’s history, which spans four live-action theatrical releases and five direct-to-video animated films.

Now, fans who missed the theatrical run or simply want to revisit the action from home have a date to mark on their calendars. ‘Mortal Kombat II’ will be available for digital purchase and rental on June 9, 2026, arriving just over a month after its cinema premiere. The HBO Max streaming debut is projected to follow around July 24, based on Warner Bros.’s current pattern of a 77-day gap between theatrical and streaming releases.

The film has continued to build its legacy well into its theatrical run. At the time of writing, ‘Mortal Kombat II’ has grossed just over $101 million globally, earning it the title of the highest-grossing fighting video game movie of all time. While the competition in that particular category is admittedly limited, the milestone still signals a meaningful shift in how seriously studios and audiences are treating the genre.

Karl Urban leads the cast as Johnny Cage, joined by returning favorites including Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade.

The sequel carries an $80 million production budget and ramps things up with more elaborate fight choreography and significantly more gruesome set pieces compared to its predecessor. With the digital window opening this June and a streaming debut projected to follow shortly after, the film is about to reach a much wider audience than its theatrical run alone could deliver.

Whether you are a longtime fan of the games or someone who only discovered the franchise through the 2021 reboot, the home release of ‘Mortal Kombat II’ is shaping up to be one of the bigger summer viewing events, so which character are you most excited to see in action on a rewatch?
