After decades of false starts and studio shuffles, the live-action return of He-Man is finally here. ‘Masters of the Universe‘ arrives in theaters on June 5, 2026, carrying with it a sprawling ensemble, a substantial budget, and the weight of franchise expectations that have been building since the franchise’s animated heyday.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Mattel Studios, and Escape Artists, with a reported budget of $170 to $200 million, the film is directed by Travis Knight and carries a screenplay by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and Dave Callaham. The project’s road to screens was anything but smooth, passing through Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and Netflix before Amazon MGM set it on course for a theatrical release.

Nicholas Galitzine Steps Into the Role of He-Man

In May 2024, Galitzine was officially cast as Prince Adam of Eternia and his alter ego He-Man, with the announcement quickly generating significant attention around the project. Known primarily for romantic dramas, the role required a transformation far removed from anything in his previous work.

For Galitzine, physically preparing for the role of He-Man was one of the hardest things he had ever done, with the actor describing moments where he would be fasted for 18 hours, completing a three-hour weight session and then going straight into stunt work.

‘Masters of the Universe’ Reviews Are In, and Critics Can’t Stop Talking About Jared Leto’s Skeletor

Galitzine shared the depth of that challenge in an April 2026 interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying the experience required six months of full-time commitment minimum and tested how far he was willing to push himself, though he expressed genuine pride in the result.

When production wrapped, Galitzine took to Instagram to call it the role of a lifetime, writing that he had put everything into playing both Adam and He-Man and that he was proud of the movie the cast and crew had made together.

The Villains: Jared Leto as Skeletor and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn

Jared Leto takes on the role of Skeletor, the dastardly warlock who has left Eternia in ruins under his rule, while Alison Brie plays Evil-Lyn, one of Skeletor’s most powerful allies. Together, they form the film’s central antagonist pairing.

The casting of Leto has generated notable tension around the film’s marketing, with reports indicating Amazon effectively placed Leto on a gag order following production and chose not to prominently feature him in promotional materials, despite Skeletor appearing throughout the campaign’s visuals.

According to Puck News, Leto was paid $5 million for the role and did not appear at the film’s premiere. It is a pointed dynamic for a franchise whose villain is arguably as iconic as its hero.

Brie’s Evil-Lyn, by contrast, has featured more openly in the film’s promotion, rounding out a villain side of the cast that also includes Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, forming Skeletor’s trio of primary henchmen.

Idris Elba, Camila Mendes, and the Heroes of Eternia

The film follows Prince Adam as he joins forces with his closest allies, Teela and Duncan also known as Man-At-Arms, to save his family and his world and embrace his true destiny as He-Man. Filling those pivotal roles are two of the more compelling casting choices in the ensemble.

Idris Elba plays Duncan, known as Man-At-Arms, while Camila Mendes takes on the role of Teela, Adam’s key ally and the Captain of the Royal Guard. Both characters occupy the space between the film’s two worlds, grounding the more fantastical elements of Eternia in personal loyalty.

Morena Baccarin rounds out the heroic core as the Sorceress, who is also Teela’s biological mother, while Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson plays Malcolm, also known as Fisto. James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley appear as King Randor and Queen Marlena, completing the royal family at the center of the story.

A Legacy Cast, a Beloved Cameo, and the Full Supporting Ensemble

The film also features a brief but welcome cameo from original He-Man actor Dolph Lundgren, who appears as a mysterious figure and offers advice to Adam in a gym setting, a nod to the franchise’s history that reviewers have noted lands warmly.

Kristen Wiig voices the lovable Roboto in a voice-over role, with early reviews singling her performance out as a genuine highlight. Composer Daniel Pemberton scored the film with an assist from Brian May on guitar, reviving sonic elements connected to the original Queen involvement in the 1987 film.

The 2026 film is a complete live-action reboot with no narrative ties to the 1987 Dolph Lundgren version, positioning itself as an aggressive, big-budget origin story that grounds a significant portion of its runtime in the corporate mundanity of modern Earth before ever setting foot in Castle Grayskull.

Whether this ensemble and this reimagining of Eternia is enough to launch a new franchise chapter is the question on every fan’s mind, so share your thoughts below on which casting choice you think is the most inspired in this new take on ‘Masters of the Universe’.
