‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Veteran Actor Killed in Shocking Tarzana Stabbing as Suspect’s Haunting 911 Call Leaves Hollywood Stunned
Hollywood is mourning the loss of a beloved character actor whose decades-long career brought life to some of cinema and television’s most memorable supporting roles. A familiar face to audiences across generations, James Handy was the kind of working actor who quietly elevated every project he touched, building a legacy that stretched across nearly five decades of film and television.
Handy was a New York-born actor who had been active on screen since 1977, amassing an extraordinary range of credits across both film and television. He accumulated nearly 150 acting credits over the course of his career, with roles in beloved films and popular television series alike. His presence in so many recognizable projects made him a trusted fixture in Hollywood, the kind of performer whose face audiences knew long before they knew his name.
Among his most celebrated film appearances were roles in ‘The Verdict’, ‘Arachnophobia’, ‘Jumanji’, and more recently ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. On television, he was a recurring presence on ‘NYPD Blue’, appeared in ‘The West Wing’, and made guest appearances on crime dramas including ‘9-1-1’, ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’, and ‘CSI: NY’. Few character actors of his generation could point to a résumé that so consistently placed them at the center of American popular culture.
On Wednesday, June 3, around 9:30 a.m., West Valley area patrol officers responded to a call in the 19200 block of Erwin Street in Tarzana after a 911 caller stated, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” Officers arrived to find Handy unconscious in the front yard of the residence, suffering from a stab wound to his chest, and he was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, where he was pronounced deceased.
The suspect, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, flagged down the responding officers himself, telling them he was the one they were looking for. Police confirmed that Gledhill resided at the location with his mother, who was Handy’s girlfriend. Gledhill was arrested and transported to Van Nuys Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of murder, with his bail set at two million dollars.
Authorities have not released a motive in the case, nor any details about Gledhill’s background or what allegedly led up to the stabbing. The investigation remains active, with the LAPD asking anyone with additional information to contact the Robbery-Homicide Division, Valley Section.
