Tupac Shakur Is Joining the Yakuza Universe as a Video Game Character and Snoop Dogg Made It Happen

Few gaming announcements at Summer Game Fest have ever landed quite like this one. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the Japanese developer widely celebrated for its ‘Yakuza’ and ‘Like a Dragon’ series, has been building anticipation for its sweeping new title ‘Stranger Than Heaven’ for some time now. The game is set across five different eras spanning from 1915 to 1965, with its events unfolding across five distinct Japanese cities. It is an ambitious departure from the studio’s modern-day crime drama roots, positioning itself as a period action epic with a deeply cinematic ambition.

The story follows a protagonist navigating the origins of the Tojo Clan, the yakuza organization prominently featured throughout the ‘Like a Dragon’ franchise, with gameplay incorporating music collection mechanics and entertainment management alongside its signature brawling. The cast assembled for the game already read like an all-star event, featuring names like Dean Fujioka, Moeka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Akio Otsuka, and singers Tori Kelly, Satoshi Fujihara, and Ado. But nothing prepared the crowd at Summer Game Fest for what came next.

The new trailer for ‘Stranger Than Heaven’ closes with a dramatic pause before Tupac Shakur steps out of the shadows, clad in an open-chest kimono and his distinctive paisley print bandana, with his actor credit reading simply “Tupac.” The character he portrays is named Amaru, a name drawn from the late rapper’s own middle name, which in turn references the 18th century Peruvian rebel Túpac Amaru II. The moment sent shockwaves across the gaming and hip-hop communities simultaneously.

The reveal did not arrive without a human face to explain it. Snoop Dogg, who also appears in the game, took to the stage at Summer Game Fest to tell the audience that the inclusion came together through his close relationship with Shakur’s estate. “The Tupac estate and my son and myself, we work very closely together,” Snoop told the crowd. “So it just made sense to put him in this game, because his likeness and his spirit still lives on, I just felt like it was so connected to what we’re doing,” he told Video Games Chronicle. Snoop Dogg co-founded Death Row Games with his son Cordell Broadus, who also appears in the game as a character.

For those concerned about how Shakur’s image would be handled, Sega moved quickly to address the conversation. The official press release confirmed that the portrayal is being made with the permission and ongoing supervision of his estate, Amaru Entertainment, and that RGG Studio crafted his character design based on archival footage and photographs entirely without the use of AI. The studio also confirmed that Japanese actor Bunta Sugawara, who died in 2014, will similarly see his likeness appear in the game. Both inclusions have sparked conversation about the ethics of digital posthumous representation, but the studio’s transparent no-AI commitment has been a notable part of the messaging.

‘Stranger Than Heaven’ is set to release worldwide on January 15, 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. Snoop Dogg is also contributing to the game’s official theme song alongside Satoshi Fujihara, Ado, and Tori Kelly. With one of the most talked-about gaming reveals in recent memory now locked in, the question fans are wrestling with is whether Amaru will be a major player in the story or a brief but powerful cameo, and if you have thoughts on Tupac Shakur appearing in a Yakuza universe game nearly three decades after his passing, the comments are exactly the place to share them.
