Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Is Already Breaking Ticket Records and AMC’s Website
Few filmmakers in Hollywood carry the kind of gravity that Christopher Nolan does, and the early response to his upcoming epic adaptation has made that unmistakably clear. With nearly every major release in recent memory competing fiercely for audience attention in a crowded summer landscape, anticipation for ‘The Odyssey’ has been building steadily since the project was first announced, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
The film follows Odysseus, the legendary Greek king, across a sweeping mythic journey and was shot entirely on IMAX film over 91 days of principal photography across multiple locations. It is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic and has been positioned as a major theatrical experience built specifically for large-format viewing. The sheer ambition of the production alone has made it one of the most talked-about films of the year.
The cast assembled for the project reads like a Hollywood dream roster, with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron all appearing in the film. More specifically, Damon carries the film as Odysseus, Holland plays his son Telemachus, Hathaway portrays Penelope, and Zendaya takes on the role of the goddess Athena, with Pattinson playing the antagonist Antinous.
When Premium Large Format tickets went on sale on June 5, the demand was immediate and overwhelming. The rush was so intense that AMC’s website left fans facing virtual wait times of more than an hour before they could even gain access to the ticketing page. Fandango also experienced a slowdown on the same day, and moviegoers found themselves stuck in comic-con-style queues just to secure their seats.
The numbers that followed were historic. Sources confirmed that the first-day advance PLF ticket sales for ‘The Odyssey’ were the highest AMC had seen for any major studio movie in four years, with the PLF presales alone outpacing the total first-day presales across all formats for any major theatrical release since 2022. AMC CEO Adam Aron took to social media to acknowledge the chaotic rollout, apologizing for the long queues while confirming the record-breaking result.
According to Aron, the only first-day AMC results to top ‘The Odyssey’ since 2022 came from the company’s own AMC Theatres Distribution music releases, specifically Beyoncé’s Renaissance concert film in 2023 and the two Taylor Swift theatrical events in 2023 and 2025. Outside of those concert events, no traditional studio release had come close. Universal had already taken the unprecedented step of putting 70mm and 70mm IMAX tickets on sale a full year in advance, and those screenings sold out quickly.
The film marks Nolan’s first feature since ‘Oppenheimer,’ which opened to $82 million domestically, and current projections place ‘The Odyssey’ in a strong range for its opening weekend when it arrives on July 17. Analytics firm Gower Street has already identified Nolan’s film as one of the key titles expected to drive the global box office toward a historic year in 2026. With the kind of presale chaos that rivals concert drops for pop megastars, it is clear audiences are treating this one as an event unto itself.
Whether you are racing to lock down your IMAX seats or still deciding how you want to experience ‘The Odyssey’ for the first time, we would love to hear which format you are planning to see it in and whether these record-breaking presales have only made you more excited.
