‘Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’ Is Delayed Again, But a Paramount Exec Says It’s Real, Playable, and Worth the Wait

Few games in recent memory have had a more turbulent road to release than ‘Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra,’ the World War II-era action-adventure title led by Uncharted architect Amy Hennig. Developed by Skydance New Media and set to be published by Plaion, the game features an ensemble of four playable characters, weaving together a globe-trotting narrative centered on some of Marvel’s most iconic wartime figures. With Hennig’s name attached and a genuinely striking story trailer already out in the world, anticipation for the project has stayed high even as the release window has kept slipping.

The cast includes Khary Payton and Drew Moerlein leading the ensemble as Azzuri and Steve Rogers respectively, alongside Marque Richardson as Gabriel Jones and Megalyn Echikunwoke as Nanali, with the game built on Unreal Engine 5. It first hit headlines in early 2024 after an eye-catching trailer was revealed as part of Epic Games’ State of Unreal event at GDC, immediately generating significant buzz around what a Hennig-led Marvel title could look like in motion.

Now, the news fans were quietly dreading has arrived. A Paramount Games Studio executive has confirmed the game will not be released until at least 2027, following a decision to prioritize quality over speed. The source of the update is Shawn Kittelsen, head of creative at the newly formed Paramount Games Studio, who spoke to IGN and said that “there was a decision made that rather than try to push the game out as quickly as possible, it would be better to focus on the quality of the game and making sure the team has time to cook.” For a project of this scope, the reasoning is understandable, even if patience among fans is being stretched thin.

The silver lining embedded in the delay news is one worth holding onto. Kittelsen confirmed that the game is real and playable, and noted that Amy Hennig and the team have big ambitions for the level of quality they want to hit. Following the November 2025 delay announcement, many had begun to speculate that the project was in serious trouble or might never come out at all, so an exec going on record to say it exists on a hard drive and is actively in development carries real weight.

This is now the game’s third delay. Its original target was a 2025 release, which shifted to an early 2026 window, which then slipped to “beyond early 2026” before landing at the current 2027 floor. Under the newly announced Paramount Games Studio restructure, Hennig has moved from co-president of Skydance New Media to creative director of Paramount Games Studio, suggesting the team around the project has reorganized significantly even as the game itself continues to take shape.

Hennig is also attached to an untitled Star Wars game at Paramount Games Studio, and with her previous Star Wars project at Visceral Games having been cancelled back in 2013, fans of that era of her career are watching closely to see whether lightning can strike twice. For now, though, ‘Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’ remains the marquee title, and if the quality bar Kittelsen described is truly what the team is chasing, the wait may yet prove worthwhile.

With delays piling up and a 2027 window still not locked in, do you think ‘Rise of Hydra’ can still live up to the hype Hennig’s name and that original trailer generated, or has the wait already cost it too much momentum?
