‘Mortal Kombat II’ Is Coming Home and the First 10 Minutes Are Already Here to Hype You Up

After years of fans demanding Johnny Cage get his moment in the live-action spotlight, ‘Mortal Kombat II‘ finally delivered the kind of brutal, self-aware blockbuster the franchise had been building toward. Directed once again by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, the sequel embraced the deeper lore of the games far more boldly than its predecessor, pulling iconic characters and story threads that longtime fans had been waiting to see rendered in live action.

Karl Urban leads the film as Johnny Cage, joined by Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Martyn Ford as the imposing Shao Kahn, with the bulk of the original cast also returning alongside them. Reviewers praised Urban’s comedic timing and the film’s balance of gore and humor, with critical reception landing around 64 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, ahead of the film’s digital debut, IGN has officially released the first ten minutes of ‘Mortal Kombat II’ online, giving fans a proper first look at the opening before they can purchase or rent the full thing. New Line Cinema confirmed the film will be available digitally in North America starting June 9, with rental and purchase options landing on platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. That makes today’s ten-minute drop feel like a perfectly timed pre-fight tease.

The film carried a reported production budget of around $80 million and has since grossed approximately $125 million in theaters, with roughly $77.7 million of that total coming from North America and $47.8 million from overseas markets. That worldwide haul was enough to officially surpass the 1995 original’s $122.2 million global total, making ‘Mortal Kombat II’ the highest-grossing entry in the franchise’s entire live-action history in just three weeks.

The numbers and critical reception together paint the picture of a sequel that did exactly what it needed to do, even if it did not quite become the mainstream crossover event some had hoped for.

Screenwriter Jeremy Slater has already been working on a third film, and even confirmed that one major character death in ‘Mortal Kombat II’ was deliberately left ambiguous in order to set up a potential resurrection down the line. Physical copies on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD are set to follow on July 28, accompanied by a range of special features including a deep dive with franchise creator Ed Boon.

For fans who skipped the theatrical run or simply want to relive the chaos from the couch, the timing could not be better. Whether the first ten minutes are enough to get you to hit rent the moment the digital release drops is the real question worth debating.
