Sydney Sweeney Defends Cassie’s ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 OnlyFans Arc: “I’m Playing a Character”

Few storylines in recent television history have ignited as much debate as Cassie Howard’s journey through the final season of ‘Euphoria’. The third season premiered on April 12, following a four-year wait since the second season concluded in 2022, and features a five-year time jump placing the characters firmly in adulthood. From the moment trailers teased what lay ahead for Cassie, it was clear creator Sam Levinson had taken the character somewhere no one expected, and audiences had feelings.

Cassie’s arc in the final season sees the insecure young woman turn to online sex work after her husband Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi, falls on hard financial times. With the help of her ex-best friend Maddy, played by Alexa Demie, she builds a small OnlyFans empire, chasing both income and the validation she has craved since her very first scene. Fan reaction went viral almost immediately, with multiple viewers describing the storyline as a “humiliation ritual,” and others calling it “fetish central.”

Now, Sydney Sweeney is speaking out. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the actress addressed the creative conversations she had with Levinson before a single frame was filmed. She revealed that he sent her the full scripts with all of Cassie’s scenes already written, called her afterward, and asked how she felt. Her response, visible in the post shared by @VanityFair, was direct: “Look, I’m playing a character. Do I agree with all of Cassie’s decisions? Would I personally make these choices? No, of course not. But I’m an actor and that’s my job.”

Sweeney described the storyline as a natural extension of who Cassie has always been. “From the very beginning, you can see that Cassie has this need to be loved. She has a need to be validated by other people. She doesn’t know how to love herself unless someone else loves her,” she explained, adding that she genuinely understood how Levinson arrived at this version of the character.

What makes the story even more layered is that Levinson himself once considered pulling back. Speaking to The New York Times’ Popcast, Levinson admitted he initially thought about filming the entire OnlyFans storyline without any nudity, only for Sweeney to push back immediately, telling him it made no sense to sidestep the reality of what her character was doing. He praised her as a “totally fearless” actress and noted the deep level of trust their creative relationship had built over three seasons.

Not everyone in the cast shares that enthusiasm. Chloe Cherry, who was herself an adult film actress and OnlyFans creator before joining the show, called Cassie’s new storyline “crazy as fuck” given her character’s background and circumstances, adding a perspective to the conversation that few others could credibly offer. Critics were similarly unmoved, with the season earning a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest in the show’s run.

‘Euphoria’ has always thrived in the space between discomfort and empathy, and Sweeney’s willingness to defend the material on those terms is a reminder that the most contested creative choices rarely come from carelessness. Whether you read Cassie’s arc as a bold portrait of self-destruction or an exercise in excess, it’s hard to argue the performance itself is anything less than committed, so where do you land on what Sweeney brought to Cassie this final season?
