J.Lo’s ‘Office Romance’ Pulls Nearly 21 Million Views in Its Netflix Opening Weekend

Jennifer Lopez has long held a special claim on the romantic comedy genre, and her latest Netflix project makes a strong case that audiences are nowhere near done showing up for her. The star’s new film, ‘Office Romance’, arrived on the platform on June 5, 2026, marking her return to a genre she helped define in the early 2000s. Lopez plays Jackie Cruz, a perfectionist CEO whose employees are scared to even breathe around her, who finds herself falling hard for the company’s ambitious new lawyer, played by Brett Goldstein.

The film was directed by Ol Parker, known for ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’, and written by Goldstein alongside Joe Kelly. The ensemble cast includes Betty Gilpin, Amy Sedaris, Tony Hale, and Bradley Whitford. One of the more charming behind-the-scenes details is that the film reunites Lopez with Edward James Olmos, who originally played her father in the 1997 film ‘Selena’, and once again steps into that same role here.

Per Netflix, ‘Office Romance’ topped the charts from June 1st through June 7th, clocking in at 40.1 million hours watched and equating to 20.9 million views in its opening days. That number, reported by What’s on Netflix, signals a genuinely strong debut for the rom-com. The film soared well past the week’s second-place title, ‘Creed III’, which pulled in 7.9 million views, and third-place ‘Swapped’, which earned 7.5 million views in its sixth week on the platform.

Within a single day of its release, the film dethroned the animated movie ‘David’ to become the number one film in a whopping 65 territories across the world, including the United States. This continues a pattern for Lopez on Netflix. Her production company Nuyorican Productions holds a partnership with the streamer, which previously produced ‘The Mother’ and ‘Atlas’, both of which dominated the charts following their respective debuts.

Despite that viewership momentum, critical reception has been a different story. The film currently sits at a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 44 reviews, alongside a 50% Popcornmeter score from audiences. Audiences were divided, with some finding the chemistry between Lopez and Goldstein entertaining while others called the film predictable and reliant on familiar rom-com clichés.

Lopez herself has acknowledged that this one plays differently from her earlier work in the genre, describing it as a very classic romantic comedy but with unexpected jokes and calling it a little different from her earlier rom-coms, which were very sweet and wholesome, in an interview with Netflix Tudum.

The debate between critic scores and streaming numbers is one the industry keeps revisiting, and ‘Office Romance’ sits squarely at that crossroads. Whether you think the film earns its chart position or simply benefits from Lopez’s undeniable pull, the conversation is clearly just getting started, so what is your take on ‘Office Romance’ and does the audience turning up in such huge numbers change how you feel about the critical backlash?
