Hulu’s ‘Prison Break’ Reboot Shakes Up Its Cast Before Filming Even Begins
Few shows in the history of network television left a mark quite like ‘Prison Break’. The original Fox drama, which debuted in 2005, gripped audiences with its tightly constructed premise and became a defining thriller of its era, earning a loyal following that has kept the conversation alive long after the series wrapped.
Now Hulu is stepping into that legacy with something bold and deliberately separate. Development on a new adaptation began in late 2023, with ‘Mayans M.C.’ alum Elgin James writing and showrunning the project, and the show received an official series order in October 2025. Rather than retread familiar ground, the new iteration shifts focus away from the original storyline while maintaining the franchise’s tense prison-thriller roots, following a soldier-turned-corrections officer who takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America in order to prove how far she will go for someone she loves.
With production gearing up, casting news has been making waves, and the latest development involves a notable behind-the-scenes change. According to Collider, Kelli Berglund, known for her work on ‘Heels’ and ‘Now Apocalypse’, has been cast in a series regular role, stepping into the part of Cheyenne, a female inmate at the center of the story. Priscilla Delgado originally played the character in the pilot episode before the role was recast. No official explanation for the switch has been provided by the production.
Berglund brings a diverse résumé to the role, having previously starred as Bree Davenport in the Disney XD series ‘Lab Rats’, appeared in the Starz comedy ‘Now Apocalypse’, and taken on roles in ‘Animal Kingdom’, ‘The Goldbergs’, and ‘Doctor Odyssey’, as well as films including ‘Hubie Halloween’ and ‘Cherry’. The casting signals Hulu’s continued investment in assembling recognizable television talent for what is shaping up to be one of the streamer’s most high-profile projects.
The broader ensemble already features Emily Browning as Cassidy, Drake Rodger as Tommy, Lukas Gage as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas as Michael “Ghost”, JR Bourne as Junior, Georgie Flores as Andrea, and Myles Bullock as Darius “Red”. Pilot guest stars include Margo Martindale, Ray McKinnon, Donal Logue, Lili Taylor, and Sylvester Powell. The lineup suggests the show is aiming for serious dramatic weight rather than a straightforward nostalgia play.
Production is set to begin in June, with parts of the series scheduled to shoot on stages at Radford Studio Center. The series is projected to spend $53.2 million across approximately 63 shooting days. Original series executive producer Dawn Olmstead is also on board, providing a creative bridge between the classic franchise and its new chapter.
Importantly, fans hoping to see the show’s most iconic duo back in action will need to adjust their expectations. Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows will not have any role in the show, though they may be mentioned. The decision to build an entirely fresh story within the same world is a gamble, but one that has clearly attracted serious creative and financial commitment from all sides.
Whether the new ‘Prison Break’ can capture even a fraction of what made the original so electric remains the biggest question of all, and it would be great to hear your take on whether a ‘Prison Break’ story without Scofield at its core can truly carry the weight of that name.
