‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Sequel Is Officially Happening, And Writer David Koepp Already Has A Plan
The ‘Jurassic Park‘ franchise just keeps finding new ways to reinvent itself, and it seems the dinosaurs are not done roaming the earth just yet. ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ became one of the biggest box office stories of the summer, pulling in massive numbers worldwide and proving that audiences still have an appetite for prehistoric chaos. With Scarlett Johansson leading a fresh cast into uncharted territory, the film marked a deliberate reset for the long running series.
That success has apparently been enough to convince Universal to move forward with another chapter. A sequel to ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ is being developed, with the project still in its early stages according to writer David Koepp. The update comes straight from the man who has shaped this franchise since its earliest days.
Koepp, who also wrote the original ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘The Lost World, Jurassic Park,’ explained that the philosophy behind ‘Rebirth’ was to scale things back. He said the goal was to make the dinosaurs feel special again by restricting them, rather than letting the world sprawl endlessly the way it had in previous films.
According to the writer, the real challenge now is figuring out how to expand the story again in a way that feels logical and scientifically grounded. Koepp admitted that nobody has quite cracked how to do that yet, which is why the sequel remains in early development.
It is worth remembering just how big ‘Rebirth’ actually was for the franchise. The film went on to gross 869 million dollars worldwide and even landed an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics upon release.
Fans of the franchise will likely remember that ‘Rebirth’ was already framed as a soft reset, bringing in new characters like Zora Bennett, Henry Loomis, and Duncan Kincaid while stepping away from the Owen and Claire era entirely. Koepp’s comments suggest the team is wary of repeating the mistakes that made ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ feel overstuffed and creatively exhausted.
For now, there is no word on whether Gareth Edwards will return to direct, or if Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and the rest of the new cast will reprise their roles. Given how early things still are, it could be a while before any casting or release details emerge.
Still, the fact that Koepp is already thinking about the sequel’s central problem suggests Universal is serious about keeping this new era alive. Whether the franchise can find a way to “logically and scientifically” grow without losing the sense of scale that made ‘Rebirth’ special remains the big question heading into development.
With the door now officially open for another adventure, how do you think the ‘Jurassic World’ franchise should expand the world this time without making the dinosaurs feel ordinary again?
