The Real Reason Spider-Man Keeps Silencing the Punisher in ‘Brand New Day’ Is Exactly What Fans Hoped For
When Marvel Studios announced that Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle would be crossing into the world of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, fans immediately had one burning question: how do you fit a skull-vested, foul-mouthed vigilante who kills without hesitation into a film built for the PG-13 crowd? It is the kind of creative puzzle that could easily go wrong, stripping the Punisher of everything that makes him so compelling in the process.
The first trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ offered an early glimpse at the solution, with a scene showing Spider-Man webbing Frank’s mouth shut just before he can finish dropping an expletive, hinting that the wall-crawler and the war veteran have already crossed paths more than once, and that Peter has developed his own workaround for the Punisher’s colorful vocabulary. It became one of the most talked-about moments in the footage, equal parts funny and telling about the dynamic between the two.
Now, Holland has spelled out the full strategy. In a new media interaction, the actor explained that the creative team found a recurring solution to Frank’s habit: “Every time he goes to swear, we just web his mouth.” Holland also praised Bernthal’s presence on screen, saying, “I think people are going to love Jon in this film. When he’s on screen, he sets such a great tone.” It is a deceptively clever bit of physical comedy that doubles as genuine character work, using Peter’s instincts and Frank’s defiance to establish the tension between them without sacrificing either personality.
Holland has been equally clear that the laughs are not masking a defanged version of the character. Speaking to Empire Magazine for its July cover story, Holland addressed the concerns head on: “I know that there are concerns about taking a sort of R-rated character and putting him into one of these movies, but the way that we’ve designed the world around him feels very authentic to the Frank Castle we know.” For fans who spent years watching Bernthal’s raw, brutally human portrayal across the Netflix Marvel shows and then in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, those words carry real weight.
Bernthal himself offered his own window into where Frank’s head is at in the film. “Frank Castle is perfectly at peace in a world of absolute darkness,” the actor told Empire. “He’s not looking for a buddy, he’s not looking for a friend, he’s not looking for a hand to pull him out of the hole that he’s in. He’s fine living in there. In fact, all he wants to do is dig deeper.” That is not the description of a character who has been softened for the sake of franchise compatibility.
Holland described the on-screen relationship as something that evolved naturally during production, with he and Bernthal improvising together until the dynamic shifted from mutual contempt into what Holland called a “big brother, little brother rivalry,” which he named his favorite dynamic he has ever had as Spider-Man. Given that his previous benchmark was sharing scenes with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, that is no small claim.
Holland and Bernthal have a long-running friendship that dates back to the 2017 film ‘Pilgrimage’, and the two even helped each other during their respective MCU casting processes, with Bernthal crediting Holland for encouraging him to pursue the Punisher role in the Netflix series. That real-world history clearly feeds into the chemistry audiences are about to see. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is scheduled to open in theaters on July 31, 2026.
Whether that mouth-webbing gag ends up being a one-time joke or a running bit throughout the film, it speaks to a film that understands the Punisher deeply enough to laugh at the right things, and take the rest seriously.
