Kevin Feige Explains Why ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Couldn’t Work Without Chris Evans And Robert Downey Jr
Marvel Studios has spent the better part of two years building anticipation for ‘Avengers Doomsday,’ and much of that hype has centered on two names fans never expected to see back in the fold. The film reunites directors Anthony and Joe Russo with a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, and dozens more familiar faces, all set for release on December 18, 2026.
The road to that reunion was not a simple one. Joe and Anthony Russo have described developing Downey’s new character as an intense process, one that pulled the actor deep into building out backstory and even costume concepts for a role that looks nothing like the hero he played for over a decade. That transformation, from Tony Stark to Victor Von Doom, has only made the mystery around his and Evans’ involvement more compelling.
Now Feige and the Russos are finally opening up about why both actors needed to return together. Speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, the trio explained that bringing back Evans and Downey Jr felt necessary for the story of ‘Avengers Doomsday’ to be properly told, describing it as something the narrative itself demanded rather than a nostalgia play. Rotten Tomatoes shared the exchange in a video posted to its account, capturing Feige stating plainly that there is nobody they are closer with than Robert.
That framing carries weight given how much convincing it apparently took to get here. Joe Russo has revealed that reinserting Downey into the MCU as Doctor Doom was originally Kevin Feige’s idea, floated after Downey had spent over a decade as the franchise’s defacto frontman playing Tony Stark. The Russos initially turned the offer down, saying they simply did not have a story or a way into it, and remained resistant for a while before a collaborator eventually cracked the concept that changed their minds.
Evans’ return has been treated with similar secrecy. Alongside Downey Jr as Doctor Doom, the film is expected to feature a mix of newer MCU faces and returning X-Men stars, including Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Alan Cumming, among others. Feige has previously discussed with Fandango how the Russos are managing such a massive roster of actors across the film.
The production has also gone to unusual lengths to keep details under wraps. Joe Russo has said the team is being pretty stringent about preventing photographs from leaking during filming, a level of secrecy that has only fueled speculation about exactly how Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom factor into the larger story. With ‘Avengers Doomsday’ aiming to close out the Multiverse Saga before ‘Avengers Secret Wars’ arrives the following year, Marvel clearly sees this pairing as the emotional and narrative backbone of the entire event.
For longtime fans, seeing Feige and the Russos frame Evans and Downey’s return as essential rather than sentimental adds real stakes to a film that already has enormous expectations riding on it.
