Disney Just Made It Official: Standard Theaters Won’t Get the New ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Footage
Marvel’s return of ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ to theaters has been building anticipation for weeks, framed as far more than a simple nostalgia screening ahead of December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Since Joe and Anthony Russo first announced the re-release at CinemaCon, fans have been speculating about exactly what new footage might be waiting inside the film’s runtime.
That speculation gained real traction once tickets went on sale August 25, alongside a new trailer and poster confirming the re-release’s official title, ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore.’ The presentation clocks in at 185 minutes, four minutes longer than the original 2019 cut, making it the longest Marvel Studios release yet and adding fuel to questions about who would actually get to see that extra footage.
Disney has now settled that question directly. According to the studio’s own press release, the exclusive look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ built into the Encore presentation “will also be available to audiences who see ‘Avengers: Endgame: Encore’ on IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screens,” confirming that standard theatrical screenings will simply play the original 2019 cut with none of the new material.
That exclusivity ties directly into Infinity Vision, a brand-new Premium Large Format certification Disney is introducing alongside the re-release. According to the studio, Infinity Vision is “designed to signify to audiences the biggest, brightest, and most immersive cinematic experiences,” verifying that participating theaters meet strict technical standards for screen size, laser projection brightness, and premium audio.
The timing behind that launch isn’t coincidental. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens December 18 alongside Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ and IMAX has already committed its screens exclusively to Villeneuve’s film for that release window, leaving Marvel’s own tentpole without access to the large-format screens it has traditionally relied on. Introducing Infinity Vision now, tied to a guaranteed-draw re-release like ‘Endgame Encore,’ gives Disney a low-risk opportunity to familiarize audiences with the new premium badge months before ‘Doomsday’ actually needs it.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has offered a general sense of what the new footage accomplishes, previously saying ‘Doomsday’ will pick up where ‘Endgame’ left off “but also go back to when it all started with X-Men,” according to WDW News Today’s coverage of the CinemaCon announcement. Beyond that framing, Joe Russo has only said the footage is set within the ‘Doomsday’ story and built as a bridge between the two films, leaving most of the specifics to fan speculation.
That speculation has settled on a few likely candidates, including a possible scene of Loki appearing at Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s house to warn them their happy ending carries consequences, tying into Loki’s TVA jacket appearance already glimpsed in the ‘Doomsday’ trailer. Nothing on that front has been officially confirmed by Marvel.

With ‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ set to hit IMAX and Infinity Vision screens beginning September 25, and standard theaters offering only the unaltered 2019 film, fans hoping to see the new ‘Doomsday’ material will need to specifically seek out a certified premium screening. Marvel has also rolled out promotional tie-ins for the release, including a ticket bundle featuring collectible popcorn buckets shaped like Iron Man’s helmet and the Infinity Gauntlet.
For a studio already accustomed to turning theatrical releases into events, tying exclusive footage to a brand-new format is a clear signal of how seriously Disney is treating the road to ‘Doomsday.’ Whether audiences embrace Infinity Vision the way they have IMAX remains to be seen, but this fall’s rollout gives Marvel a running start either way.
