Josh Brolin’s Latest Non-Answer About Thanos Has Fans Convinced Something’s Coming

Few Marvel villains have left as permanent a mark on the franchise as Thanos, and Josh Brolin has spent years fielding questions about whether the Mad Titan might somehow find his way back into the MCU. That speculation has only intensified as Marvel builds toward ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ two films explicitly designed around massive, multiverse-spanning stakes that could theoretically accommodate almost any past character’s return.

Brolin has never fully shut the door on that possibility. Back in 2024, he told Deadline that if the Russo Brothers called him for a return, he’d “be there tomorrow,” while separately telling Entertainment Tonight he might “acquiesce” fairly quickly if Joe Russo came to him with the right idea, much like his own return for the ‘Sicario’ sequel.

That pattern of cautious, door-left-open answers continued in a new interview promoting ‘The Dog Stars,’ Brolin’s upcoming film with Ridley Scott. Asked directly whether Thanos could return to the MCU, Brolin offered his most deliberately ambiguous response yet.

“I don’t know how to answer that question. Okay, I’ll leave that there,” Brolin told Collider. Rather than shutting down the idea outright or confirming anything concrete, Brolin pivoted immediately into a broader reflection on Thanos’s worldview, adding, “I really think the real world has gone off the rails, and I’m beginning to wonder if he was right.”

That comment echoes remarks Brolin has made before about Thanos’s underlying logic, telling Collider in a separate conversation that the character’s justification for wiping out half of all life to save the other half “was not necessarily wrong” from a certain narrative perspective, even as the character’s methods remained monstrous. Brolin has consistently framed Thanos less as a cartoonish villain and more as a figure whose twisted reasoning made him compelling to play.

This isn’t the first time Brolin’s comments have set off speculation about Thanos potentially reappearing. Years earlier, while promoting ‘Dune: Part Two,’ Brolin told ComicBook that he’d heard rumors about a possible Thanos return “through the grapevine,” a comment that spread quickly among fans despite Brolin himself stressing there was no official communication from Marvel backing it up at the time.

That history of vague, noncommittal answers has made Brolin something of a recurring character in the broader MCU rumor cycle, even without a single confirmed detail ever emerging from Marvel Studios itself. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving December 18 and ‘Secret Wars’ still to follow, fans have plenty of reason to keep parsing every one of Brolin’s public comments for hidden meaning.

Whether Brolin is simply enjoying the mystery or genuinely unsure what Marvel has planned, his answers have done little to quiet the ongoing debate. Given how directly both upcoming Avengers films are built around collapsing timelines and alternate realities, the door for Thanos’s return, in some form, remains at least theoretically open, even if nothing concrete has ever been confirmed.

For now, Brolin’s latest comment adds one more data point to a years-long pattern: he won’t confirm anything, but he’s clearly not ruling it out either. Given how the actor has handled every previous version of this question, that ambiguity might be exactly the point.
