Netflix’s Live-Action ‘Scooby-Doo’ Reboot Just Added Two Surprising New Cast Members

Reviving beloved animated properties for live-action television has become something of a minefield in recent years, with plenty of nostalgic franchises stumbling when translated to a new format. Getting the right cast, tone, and creative team in place can make or break whether longtime fans embrace the update or dismiss it outright.

Netflix’s latest attempt at reviving one of animation’s most enduring mystery-solving crews appears to be taking that challenge seriously, judging by the caliber of talent quietly joining its expanding ensemble.

‘Scooby-Doo: Origins‘ has added both André 3000 and Cathy Moriarty in recurring roles, according to Deadline, with the live-action Netflix series currently filming in Atlanta ahead of its scheduled 2027 premiere. Character details for both actors are being kept under wraps, adding an extra layer of intrigue to a project that’s already generating significant buzz internally at the streamer.

For André 3000, the casting marks something of a full-circle moment. He and Big Boi, performing as OutKast alongside fellow Dungeon Family members Sleepy Brown and Killer Mike, contributed the song “Land of a Million Drums” to the soundtrack of 2002’s live-action ‘Scooby-Doo’ film, meaning his return puts him in the unusual position of connecting the franchise’s two major live-action adaptations more than two decades apart. Moriarty, meanwhile, brings a decorated film career to the project, best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Raging Bull’ and a memorably villainous turn in 1998’s ‘Casper.’

The pair join a previously announced core cast that includes Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones, alongside Paul Walter Hauser in an as-yet-undisclosed role. The show’s official logline describes a story centered on Shaggy and Daphne’s final summer at camp, where they become entangled in a haunting mystery involving a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder.

From there, the two are joined by Velma and Fred as they investigate a case that gradually pulls each of them into a nightmare threatening to expose secrets they’d rather keep buried. The series marks a notable departure from prior Scooby-Doo adaptations by featuring a real Great Dane in the title role for the first time in the franchise’s history, rather than relying on animation or a costumed performer.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions, with Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serving as showrunners through their Midnight Radio banner, the eight-episode series has been building an increasingly stacked supporting cast beyond its two newest additions. That ensemble now includes Sara Gilbert, Bruce McGill, Sherilyn Fenn, Rusty Schwimmer, and Peter Macon, among several others rounding out the show’s expanding world.

Filming began back in April, and while a full trailer hasn’t yet been released, Netflix offered fans a brief first look at the production back in June, giving an early glimpse of the show’s central canine star exploring the campground setting. With such an eclectic mix of established character actors and rising talent now attached, ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ appears to be positioning itself as a genuinely fresh take rather than a simple nostalgia play.
