Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Just Proved Sisterhood Never Goes Out of Style at the ‘Practical Magic 2’ Premiere
Some on-screen sisterhoods stay with audiences for decades, and few have proven as enduring as the bond between Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s witchy Owens sisters. Nearly three decades after they first bewitched moviegoers in the 1998 cult classic, the pair are gearing up to bring that magic back to theaters, and their reunion has already become the talk of the red carpet circuit.
That anticipation has been building steadily since the sequel’s earliest development stages, when Kidman first hinted years ago that she and Bullock were “circling” a follow-up together. What started as a distant possibility has now become a full-fledged press tour, complete with international premieres and plenty of nostalgia for fans of the original film.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman stunned at the ‘Practical Magic 2’ premiere in Los Angeles, held at Directors Village on August 31. The pair reunited as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, joined by director Susanne Bier and co-stars Joey King, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.
Kidman embraced the film’s gothic aesthetic in a daring sheer black lace dress featuring an intricately embroidered bodice, a plunging neckline, and a dramatically sheer skirt with a thigh-high split, finished off with a matching lace choker. Bullock provided a striking contrast in a fitted black velvet gown with a crisp white high-neck collar and cuffs, marking a notable red carpet return for the actress, whose last premiere appearance came back in 2022 for ‘The Lost City.’
The Los Angeles event followed an earlier European premiere held on August 26 at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London, where the cast first stepped out together for the sequel. That night, Bullock turned heads in a leopard-print gown with a structured corset top and a near-waist-high slit, while Kidman opted for a silver sequin-covered gown with chain detailing and her own thigh-high split.
‘Practical Magic 2’ brings back Bullock and Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens, the witch sisters first introduced in the 1998 film based on Alice Hoffman’s novel. This time around, Sally’s daughters, previously played by Evan Rachel Wood and Alexandra Atrip, have been recast for the sequel, with Joey King stepping into the role of Kylie and Maisie Williams taking on Antonia.
Kidman has previously described returning to the role of “Gilly” as a joyful departure from some of her heavier recent projects, a sentiment that seemed to carry through in her playful, gothic-glam styling on both red carpets. Bullock, meanwhile, has continued praising her longtime friend and co-star throughout the promotional run, with the two clearly enjoying stepping back into these characters together after so many years apart.
Original cast members Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing also joined the London premiere alongside the new additions, further tying the sequel back to its predecessor’s legacy. With both premieres now behind them, all that’s left is for audiences to see whether the sequel can recapture the magic of the original when it finally hits theaters.
