Marvel Just Confirmed Who’s Actually Leading Each Team in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and It’s a Lot of Heroes To Track

Marvel’s next Avengers event has always promised scale on a level the studio hasn’t attempted before, but figuring out exactly how that many characters would actually be organized has kept fans theorizing for months. With five distinct factions all converging on screen, the question of who’s actually calling the shots within each group has become one of the film’s more compelling mysteries.

That question is starting to get real answers, thanks to a steady trickle of trailer footage, merchandise reveals, and interview comments from the people actually making the film. Piece by piece, Marvel has been confirming exactly which heroes are stepping into leadership roles as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ assembles its massive ensemble.

The team leaders in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ are Cyclops for the X-Men, Captain America for the Avengers, Yelena Belova for the New Avengers, and Reed Richards for the Fantastic Four, according to Cosmic Marvel. That structure divides the film’s sprawling cast into four core factions, each built around a familiar face taking charge.

Cyclops’ leadership role comes straight from official merchandise, with a Hot Toys collectible listing confirming James Marsden’s return to the character describes him as “the tactical leader of the X-Men,” standing against Doctor Doom alongside a comic-accurate uniform. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has separately praised Marsden’s costume and the way Cyclops’ powers are presented on screen, calling it “a sight to behold.”

On the Avengers side, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson continues to anchor that team’s roster as Captain America, appearing alongside Thor, Falcon, Ant-Man, Shang-Chi, and Loki in trailer footage showing the group preparing for the coming multiversal conflict. Meanwhile, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova has emerged as the central figure guiding the New Avengers, a team that also includes Bucky Barnes’ Winter Soldier, Red Guardian, Ghost, and U.S. Agent.

The Fantastic Four’s leadership situation has proven slightly more complicated than the others. While Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards is widely expected to guide the team, Pascal himself has pushed back on the idea that his character is stepping into a broader leadership role across the entire Avengers roster. Addressing comments made by ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ director Matt Shakman that seemed to suggest otherwise, Pascal told the Associated Press that comparisons to comic storylines where Reed eventually leads the full Avengers team were “a little bit of a mislead.”

Beyond these four core factions, the film also folds in a fifth Wakandan and Talokan contingent, featuring Shuri’s Black Panther, M’Baku, Namor, Namora, and Attuma. That five-team structure reflects just how much ground ‘Doomsday’ is covering narratively, drawing inspiration from major comic book crossover events involving both the Avengers and the X-Men.

Trailer footage has already teased friction between some of these groups, including a brief skirmish between Yelena and Mystique, suggesting the alliances won’t always run smoothly on screen despite everyone technically fighting on the same side against Doctor Doom.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, Marvel still has plenty of runway to reveal more about how these teams interact once the full story unfolds. For now, though, fans finally have a clearer roadmap for tracking who’s leading who through what’s shaping up to be one of the studio’s most ambitious ensemble efforts yet.
