‘The Whisper Man’ Just Landed A Massive Netflix Debut, Even If It Couldn’t Quite Crack The Top Five
Robert De Niro has spent the past several years steadily building a presence on streaming platforms, and his latest Netflix collaboration arrived with plenty of built-in anticipation. Between a bestselling source novel, a stacked cast, and a production pedigree tied to one of Hollywood’s most successful producing teams, this new thriller had all the makings of a genuine late-summer hit.
That anticipation carried through the film’s marketing rollout, which leaned heavily on its unsettling premise and De Niro’s return to grounded, character-driven thriller territory. Now that the numbers are in for its opening stretch on the platform, the film has delivered a debut strong enough to rank among the year’s biggest, even if it fell just shy of cracking the very top tier.
‘The Whisper Man’ debuts as the sixth biggest movie launch of 2026 with 23.2 million views, according to What’s on Netflix. The Russo Brothers-produced thriller pulled in that total during its opening three days on the platform, landing behind titles like ‘The Rip,’ ‘War Machine,’ ‘Apex,’ ‘Thrash,’ and ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ in this year’s Netflix rankings, but ahead of releases like ’72 Hours,’ ‘Office Romance,’ and ‘People We Meet on Vacation.’
Directed by James Ashcroft and based on Alex North’s 2019 bestselling psychological horror novel, the film follows Tom Kennedy, played by Adam Scott, a widowed crime writer whose young son vanishes in the small town of Featherbank, echoing the methods of a serial killer long believed to be safely locked away. That resurfacing threat forces Tom into an uneasy reunion with his estranged father, De Niro’s character, a retired detective who originally put the killer behind bars.
Michelle Monaghan rounds out the film’s central cast as Detective Amanda Beck, with Michael Keaton, Hamish Linklater, and Owen Teague filling out the supporting lineup. The film marks AGBO’s sixth collaboration with Netflix, continuing the production company’s ongoing partnership with the streamer.
AGBO’s chief creative officer Angela Russo-Otstot spoke to the significance of that continued relationship, saying, “AGBO is excited to be embarking on our sixth film with our incredible partners at Netflix. The Whisper Man is a gripping thriller but at its core is a poignant and complex story of father and son connection.
The film’s release also coincided with a busy stretch on Netflix’s broader release calendar, arriving alongside other high-profile titles competing for viewer attention throughout August. Despite that crowded field, ‘The Whisper Man’s’ 23.2 million opening-week views place it comfortably within the platform’s top tier for the year, even as it trails several other recent releases that debuted with even larger numbers.

For a psychological thriller built around a chilling childhood rhyme and a father-son reckoning, landing as the sixth biggest movie launch of the year represents a genuinely strong showing, especially given how competitive Netflix’s release slate has become in 2026. Whether the film can sustain that momentum into future weeks remains to be seen as more viewership data rolls in.
