Franchise fatigue is a real concern for any studio sitting on a beloved property, especially one that’s already spanned two critically acclaimed games and a hit television adaptation. Fans have spent years speculating about where the story goes next, with rumors swirling around everything from a third mainline game to entirely new formats.

That speculation has only intensified as HBO’s television adaptation heads into uncertain territory, with its creative mastermind stepping back from a hands-on role for the first time. Naturally, that shift raised questions about whether Naughty Dog itself might be moving on from the franchise that made the studio a household name.

Neil Druckmann has now put those concerns to rest, confirming that Naughty Dog is not done with ‘The Last of Us.’ Speaking with Gene Park for a Washington Post feature on video game writing, Druckmann said there are a couple of projects in the works that he’s very excited to talk about once the time is right, according to The Washington Post.

Druckmann emphasized that Naughty Dog remains the steward of the franchise regardless of what happens with the television side of things. He noted that even though the current HBO adaptation might eventually reach its conclusion, that doesn’t mean the broader story is finished, framing the studio’s role as an ongoing commitment to the property rather than something winding down.

These comments arrive alongside a significant shift in Druckmann’s involvement with the show itself. He confirmed he wasn’t involved in shaping the creative direction of the upcoming third season and that Naughty Dog didn’t have a creative role in that decision-making process, adding that he couldn’t personally speak to how production on the new season is progressing.

That marks a considerable change from the first two seasons, where Druckmann co-wrote multiple episodes and directed two installments alongside showrunner Craig Mazin. His reduced involvement had already been confirmed earlier, when he announced via Naughty Dog’s Instagram that he was stepping away from creative duties on the series to focus fully on the studio’s game development slate.

Druckmann stopped short of specifying exactly what form these new projects will take, leaving plenty of room for speculation. It remains unclear whether this points toward a proper ‘The Last of Us Part III,’ some revival of the previously canceled multiplayer spin-off, or an entirely different format like a comic or another adaptation altogether.

Notably, this represents a warmer tone than Druckmann struck around the Season 2 premiere last year, when he told Variety that fans shouldn’t necessarily expect more entries, suggesting the story could already be considered finished at that point. This latest comment suggests his thinking, or at least his willingness to discuss future plans publicly, has shifted somewhat since then.

For now, Naughty Dog’s primary focus remains on ‘Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,’ the studio’s first major new game release since ‘The Last of Us Part II’ launched back in 2020. That project represents a significant undertaking for the studio as it works to diversify beyond its most famous franchise.

Druckmann has previously stated that Naughty Dog won’t remain solely defined by ‘The Last of Us’ forever, pointing to multiple single-player projects already in development at the studio. Whatever these new ‘Last of Us’ projects ultimately turn out to be, Druckmann’s comments make clear the franchise still has life left in it, even as the television adaptation heads into a new chapter without his direct involvement.

What do you think Naughty Dog's next The Last of Us project will be?
