‘Legend of the White Dragon’ Reviews Reveal a Massive Gap Between Critics and Fans

Independent superhero films rarely generate this kind of split reaction, but few movies this year carry the emotional weight this one does. What should be a straightforward conversation about a low-budget passion project has instead become a genuine case study in how differently critics and audiences can experience the exact same film.

The story behind the film adds crucial context to why its reception looks the way it does. ‘Legend of the White Dragon’ marks the final on-screen role of Power Rangers icon Jason David Frank, who spent over a decade developing the project before his death in November 2022, meaning the film reached theaters years after its star was originally meant to see it released.

That backstory helps explain why the film’s current Rotten Tomatoes scores look so unusual. The movie currently sits at just 10 percent with critics based on early reviews, while its audience score, the Popcornmeter, holds steady between 76 and 80 percent based on well over 50 user ratings, an unusually wide gap even by the standards of divisive genre releases.

Professional reviews have zeroed in almost entirely on the film’s technical execution. IGN issued a particularly scathing 3 out of 10 review, going so far as to compare the film’s production quality to the notoriously low-budget work of filmmaker Neil Breen, an unflattering benchmark within independent film criticism. NYC Movie Guru’s Avi Offer similarly described the film as an uninspired, clunky, and lackluster superhero action thriller in a review posted on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics have consistently pointed to clunky dialogue, an overreliance on flashbacks that disrupt the story’s pacing, and action sequences that come across as stiff or underwhelming given the film’s technical limitations. Reviewers have also noted lackluster CGI and what several described as an “AI-generated” feel during the climactic aerial battle sequence, along with dialogue patchwork that reportedly reused decades-old sound bites from Frank’s earlier 1990s television work to fill in gaps.

Audiences, on the other hand, appear to be evaluating the film through an entirely different lens. Fan reactions have consistently framed the movie less as a polished action blockbuster and more as an essential emotional send-off, with viewers specifically responding to Frank’s raw, dramatic performance opposite co-star Michael Madsen and the film’s post-credits footage showing Frank alive and working on set.

Directed by Aaron Schoenke, the film follows Erik Reed, a former superhero known as the White Dragon who’s spent three years in hiding as a fugitive, forced to clear his name while trying to reunite with the family he’s kept secret. The story originated as a crowdfunded project, with backers supporting the film’s Kickstarter campaign as far back as 2020, long before it eventually made its way to theaters.

Adding another layer of personal significance, Frank’s real-life daughter Jenna Rae Frank appears in the film as his character’s on-screen daughter, a casting choice that several viewers have specifically highlighted as one of the movie’s most emotionally resonant elements. That kind of real-world connection between actor and material is difficult for traditional critical frameworks to fully capture, which may partly explain why professional reviews and audience reactions have diverged so sharply.

‘Legend of the White Dragon’ was released in theaters on August 28 through Well Go USA Entertainment, closing out what became an unusually long and emotional road to release following Frank’s death. For a project defined by loss, delay, and years of behind-the-scenes work to honor its late star’s original vision, the massive gap between its critical and audience reception says less about the film’s technical shortcomings and more about what different viewers are actually looking for when they watch it.

Whatever comes next for the broader universe the film was designed to launch, this release stands as a deeply personal final chapter for the performer who spent so much of his life trying to bring it to the screen.
