‘Spider-Man’ and ‘The Odyssey’ Send U.K. Box Office to Its Best August in Nearly a Decade

Summer box office numbers have felt like a rollercoaster in recent years, with studios and theater chains alike bracing for whatever comes next after a string of unpredictable seasons. Every so often, though, a combination of releases lines up perfectly to remind the industry what a truly strong month at the cinema can still look like.

That’s exactly what unfolded across the United Kingdom this past August, where two of the year’s biggest blockbusters kept theaters packed well into their respective runs. Even as the country dealt with what may have been its hottest August on record, moviegoers still showed up in force, delivering numbers the market hadn’t seen in years.

The U.K. box office reached $161.3 million in August, propelled by ‘The Odyssey‘ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ marking the highest total for the month since 2018’s record-breaking August, which brought in $201.7 million. That figure, drawn from new data provided by Rentrak, underscores just how much weight these two films carried through the final stretch of summer.

‘The Odyssey,’ which was released July 17, closed out August with U.K. earnings of $108.6 million, making it Christopher Nolan’s most successful film on home soil by a significant margin. The film remained the second-highest earner at the box office after seven weeks of release, a remarkable stretch of staying power for a title that had already been in theaters for nearly two months.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which was released July 29, has held the top spot at the U.K. box office for five straight weeks, with total earnings reaching $126.8 million by the end of August. That total puts the film on track to surpass ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which earned $131.7 million, as the highest-grossing Marvel film in U.K. history by the end of September.

Both films have continued climbing the U.K. and Ireland’s all-time box office charts throughout their respective runs, with ‘The Odyssey’ recently overtaking ‘Titanic’ to enter the territory’s top ten highest-grossing films of all time. That kind of staying power well beyond a typical opening month has proven crucial to August’s overall performance.

The U.K. wasn’t the only market to benefit from the combined box office force of these two films. Their success helped push the broader U.S. box office past the $4 billion summer milestone earlier in August, contributing to what became the biggest collective weekend in box office history at one point, with roughly $430 million earned across all films in the marketplace during a single frame.

That kind of simultaneous success across multiple major territories reflects just how rare it’s become for two blockbusters of this scale to perform this strongly at the same time, without one significantly cannibalizing the other’s audience. Industry analysts have pointed to the pairing of a legacy superhero sequel alongside a large-scale original production as a particularly effective combination for driving audiences back into theaters.

With both films still performing well into their respective runs as September begins, exhibitors are likely hoping the momentum from August carries forward into the fall release calendar. Given how much both ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ have already exceeded expectations throughout their theatrical windows, their continued presence near the top of the charts suggests neither film is finished setting new benchmarks just yet.

For an industry that’s spent the past several years searching for consistency, an August performance this strong offers a genuinely encouraging sign heading into the back half of the year.
