Marvel Studios Is Reportedly Developing a Gritty Detective Series

Marvel Studios has spent the better part of a decade building a universe defined by cosmic stakes and multiverse-scale chaos, and that scope is only growing as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ looms on the horizon. Yet even as the franchise gears up for its biggest cinematic swing yet, the studio has also been quietly experimenting with smaller, more grounded storytelling on the television side.

That experimentation hasn’t been without turbulence. Marvel’s TV arm faced a shakeup earlier this year when ‘Wonder Man’ was canceled shortly after being renewed for a second season, even as shows like ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ continue moving forward as one of the studio’s more consistent Disney+ successes.

Now a fresh wave of industry chatter suggests Marvel is developing something considerably different from its usual output: a detective series. According to reporting that traces back to entertainment insider Jeff Sneider, the concept has been described as leaning into a procedural style, drawing comparisons to the moody, character-driven atmosphere of ‘True Detective.’

Sneider reportedly compared the potential project to DC Studios’ own noir-tinged series ‘Lanterns,’ which similarly reimagines a well-known comic property through the lens of grounded crime investigation rather than traditional superhero spectacle. No cast or specific characters have been confirmed as part of the reporting, leaving plenty of room for speculation.

That speculation has already zeroed in on one obvious candidate. Given that Marvel’s street-level roster is relatively thin on dedicated investigators, many fans have pointed to Jessica Jones, the hard-drinking private eye behind Alias Investigations, who was recently reintroduced as part of ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’

With Luke Cage and Iron Fist both set to return for that show’s third season alongside Jessica Jones, some fans have gone a step further, theorizing that a detective series could double as a loose Heroes for Hire reunion built around that trio’s established chemistry. It’s a compelling enough theory given how directly the pieces already seem to be falling into place within the existing Disney+ continuity.

Adding another layer of intrigue, separate reports have floated a working codename resembling “Ahmmed Stone” or “Ammit Stone,” tied to a secretive Marvel project reportedly eyeing production as early as February. Whether that codename actually belongs to the detective series or refers to an entirely different Special Presentation remains unclear, and some chatter has even suggested the hush-hush project could lean more toward spy-thriller territory instead of a straightforward procedural format.

Separate reporting has also indicated Marvel may be quietly developing two different Special Presentations for 2027, further complicating efforts to pin down exactly which project belongs to which description. For a studio that skipped new series announcements at both San Diego Comic-Con and D23 this year, the sheer volume of behind-the-scenes activity suggests Marvel Television has considerably more in the pipeline than its recent public silence would indicate.

That silence may not last much longer. Marvel Television and Marvel Animation are set to hold a panel at New York Comic Con on October 8, a venue that fans are hoping will finally bring concrete confirmation, or at least clarity, about the detective series and its mysterious codenamed cousin.

For a franchise often criticized for leaning too heavily on a familiar formula, a stripped-down crime drama would represent a genuine tonal departure, giving Marvel room to explore new corners of its universe without the pressure of tying directly into blockbuster film continuity. Nothing here has been confirmed by Marvel Studios itself, and even basic details, like whether this ends up as a full series or a one-off Special Presentation, remain very much up in the air.
