Jeremy Renner’s ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Is Breaking Free From Paramount+ and Coming to Netflix, Here’s When

Jeremy Renner’s gritty crime drama Mayor of Kingstown is about to reach a much bigger audience. After spending years behind the Paramount+ paywall, the series is coming to Netflix, giving fans another way to watch one of Taylor Sheridan’s darker shows.

The Netflix release is especially interesting because Sheridan’s shows have mostly stayed inside the Paramount family. Series such as Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Tulsa King and Special Ops: Lioness have all been closely connected to Paramount’s streaming and TV lineup.

Mayor of Kingstown is now breaking that pattern. Netflix plans to add the series to its library on October 5, with multiple seasons expected to become available. The exact number of episodes arriving on day one has not been fully confirmed, but reports suggest viewers could get all 40 episodes from the first four seasons.

The news was confirmed by Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos during an earnings call. Talking about Netflix’s new licensing deal with Paramount, Sarandos said, “We have a new slate of licensed titles from Paramount which is going to bring a lot of new series, shows that Netflix has never had around the world.”

That could be a major opportunity for Mayor of Kingstown. The show has already built a loyal audience on Paramount+, but Netflix could put the series in front of millions of viewers who may have never watched it.

The story centers on Mike McLusky, played by Renner, who lives in the fictional town of Kingstown, Michigan. The town is built around its prison system, and nearly every part of life is connected to incarceration.

Mike finds himself caught between prisoners, gangs, police officers, prison guards, politicians and people living in the community. His unofficial job is to keep these groups from destroying each other, but keeping the peace is never simple.

The series was created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon and first premiered in 2021. It has since grown into a major part of Sheridan’s television lineup, with Renner leading the show through its increasingly dangerous story.

The Netflix arrival also comes at an interesting time for the series because Mayor of Kingstown is heading toward its final chapter. The show has already been renewed for a fifth and final season.

Production on that last season is underway in Pittsburgh. The new episodes will bring in David Morse as FBI agent Russell Hardy, who arrives in Kingstown while investigating the murder of Mike’s sister-in-law, Tracy McLusky.

Edie Falco is also returning as prison warden Nina Hobbs. Her character will once again be part of the complicated world surrounding Mike and the prison system.

The decision to end the show with Season 5 comes after the series had originally been discussed as a longer story. Co-creator Hugh Dillon had reportedly imagined the show running for as many as seven seasons, but the series will now finish with its fifth installment.

The Netflix deal also comes during a major change in Sheridan’s career. The writer and producer has signed a new overall deal with NBCUniversal, while his existing Paramount agreement is expected to continue until the end of 2028.

Netflix has also picked up other Paramount+ titles as part of the same licensing push, including SEAL Team and Watson. That means Mayor of Kingstown is not the only Paramount series getting a new home with Netflix.

For Renner fans, the timing is also worth noting. The actor’s return as Mike McLusky gives the series a chance to introduce his character to an even larger audience before the story comes to an end.

Mayor of Kingstown has always been one of Sheridan’s more intense shows. It is darker than Yellowstone and focuses less on family drama and more on crime, prisons, violence and the people trying to survive in a town where almost everyone is connected to the prison system.

Now, with Netflix opening the door to the series, viewers who missed it the first time around will finally have an easier chance to see what all the attention is about.
