M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks’ ‘Remain’ Looks Like a Romance With a Very Dark Twist – Check out the First Trailer

M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks are two names you probably would not expect to see attached to the same movie. One is known for strange mysteries, supernatural stories, and endings that can completely change what you thought you were watching. The other built his career on emotional romances filled with love, heartbreak, and impossible choices. Somehow, those very different styles have come together for Remain, and the first teaser makes the movie look every bit as unusual as the pairing sounds.

The project started with a story idea created by Shyamalan and Sparks. Instead of simply turning that idea into one movie, the two creators went in separate directions. Shyamalan developed the film, writing and directing it, while Sparks wrote a novel based on the same basic story and characters. That book was released in 2025, giving fans a chance to experience the story in a different form before the movie arrives. Now, Shyamalan is bringing his own version of the story to the big screen, and it looks like he has added plenty of his usual mystery to the romance.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Tate, an architect who is trying to put his life back together after a difficult period. After leaving a psychiatric facility, Tate travels to Cape Cod to work on a summer home for his best friend. He is also dealing with the death of his sister, so the trip is meant to give him a chance to start over and focus on something else. Instead, his new surroundings lead him toward something much more complicated. Tate meets Wren, a young woman who quickly becomes an important part of his life and pulls him into a mystery that appears to have dangerous consequences.

Phoebe Dynevor plays Wren, following her breakout role in Bridgerton. From the first footage, she seems to be much more than a simple love interest for Tate. Her arrival appears to open the door to the supernatural side of the story, while Tate becomes increasingly caught between his feelings for her and the strange events happening around him. That mix of romance and danger is what makes Remain stand out. It is not trying to be a normal love story, and it is definitely not a typical Shyamalan thriller either.

Warner Bros. is leaning into that unusual combination in its description of the movie, calling it “an unprecedented collaboration between two of the world’s most creative minds.” That is a pretty fitting way to describe the project. Sparks brings the emotional side of the story, while Shyamalan gets to build the strange world surrounding these characters. The result could be a movie that starts like a romance and slowly turns into something much darker.

The cast also includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, and Maria Dizzia. Shyamalan is producing through his Blinding Edge Pictures banner with Ashwin Rajan, while Sparks’ producing partner Theresa Park and Marc Bienstock are also involved. Sparks is serving as an executive producer on the film, keeping him closely connected to the movie version of the story he helped create.

The first teaser also confirms that Remain will arrive in theaters on February 5, 2027. Warner Bros. appears to be treating the release as a romantic counterprogramming choice for the weeks around Valentine’s Day. The studio reportedly became interested in the February window after seeing strong interest in Wuthering Heights, another romance heading to theaters. If audiences are looking for something emotional around Valentine’s season, Remain could offer something very different from the usual romantic drama.

There is already plenty of attention around the movie, especially because industry reports claim Remain has received the highest test scores of Shyamalan’s career. That does not guarantee that audiences will love the finished film, but it certainly makes the project more interesting. Shyamalan has made movies that divide viewers over the years, so strong early reactions could be a good sign for this unusual experiment.

Behind the camera, Adolpho Veloso is handling cinematography, while James Newton Howard provides the score. Howard has worked with Shyamalan on several major films before, so his music should help give Remain the eerie feeling fans expect from the director. With a grieving architect, a mysterious woman, a coastal town, romance, and something supernatural lurking underneath it all, the movie already has plenty of ingredients for a strange ride.
