M. Night Shyamalan has begun production on his latest film, Remain, a supernatural romantic thriller he wrote, directed, and produced.

The director announced the start of filming on Instagram, posting, “Day 1. Film started rolling! Feeling very very grateful.” The movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters, promises a blend of Shyamalan’s eerie style and heartfelt romance.

The story centers on Tate Donovan, a New York architect played by Gyllenhaal, who heads to Cape Cod to build a summer home for a close friend.

Struggling with deep depression, Tate seeks a new beginning but finds his life upended when he meets Wren, a young woman portrayed by Dynevor. The plot weaves supernatural elements into a love story, crafted with input from bestselling author Nicholas Sparks, who also wrote a novel based on the concept.

Shyamalan and Sparks collaborated on the story, which was announced in January 2025. Sparks shared that his manager encouraged him to develop an idea appealing to both his and Shyamalan’s fans.

After brainstorming, they settled on Shyamalan’s vision. Casting news followed, with Gyllenhaal confirmed as the lead, joined by Dynevor and Walters. The title Remain was revealed in April 2025.

Filming is underway in Rhode Island, with locations in Bristol, Providence, and Warren. A key site is the historic Cranston Street Armory in Providence, rented by Shyamalan’s Blinding Edge Pictures for $10,000 a month from May to November.

Production began on June 18 and is set to conclude by August 8. Warner Bros. Pictures will release the film in theaters on October 23, 2026.

Sparks noted that Remain combines Shyamalan’s signature supernatural twists with a romantic narrative, offering something new yet familiar for fans of both creators.

Remain sounds like an intriguing mix of Shyamalan’s spooky storytelling and Sparks’ emotional romance. Gyllenhaal and Dynevor are strong choices to bring depth to the characters, but I hope the supernatural elements enhance the love story without overshadowing it.

This could be a unique addition to Shyamalan’s work. What do you think about Remain and its blend of romance and thrills? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
