‘Resident Evil’ Fans Push Back as Zach Cregger Defends His Bold New Movie

Zach Cregger knew making a new Resident Evil movie would come with pressure. What he apparently did not expect was just how strongly some fans would react to his decision to tell a completely new story. Now, as the movie gets closer to theaters, the director is admitting that he was “naive” about the response from longtime fans.

Cregger’s Resident Evil is taking a very different path from the movie many fans expected. Instead of putting familiar characters such as Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong or Jill Valentine at the center, the film follows a new character named Bryan. Played by Austin Abrams, Bryan is a medical courier who becomes caught up in the chaos surrounding the Raccoon City Incident. The story takes place around the same period as the events of Resident Evil 2, but it is not a direct adaptation of that game’s story.

That choice has become one of the biggest talking points around the movie. Some fans have spent years hoping to see the classic Resident Evil games properly brought to the big screen, especially stories involving characters like Leon. Cregger now says he understands why those fans are disappointed.

In an interview with IGN’s Tom Jorgensen, Cregger admitted that he had not fully understood what the franchise meant to some fans before making the movie. He said he was “naive” to think people would automatically be excited simply because someone was finally making a survival horror movie based on Resident Evil. He also acknowledged that some fans had been waiting a long time to see Leon’s story receive the kind of movie adaptation they wanted.

Cregger told IGN that he is sorry his movie is not that story, but he also made it clear that he is not planning to change his approach. The film has already been made around Bryan, and the director seems confident that audiences will understand what he was trying to do once they actually see it.

This is not the first time Cregger has talked about the negative reaction. During an earlier conversation with The Playlist, he joked that promoting the movie sometimes felt like an “apology tour.” He compared the experience to running for office and trying to convince people that he is not an outsider pretending to be a Resident Evil fan.

The director clearly knows he has something to prove. At the same time, he has repeatedly insisted that this is not a case of using the Resident Evil name simply to get a bigger movie budget. Cregger has described himself as a huge fan of the games and said his goal was to make something that feels like a love letter to the franchise.

His argument is that Resident Evil does not always need to follow the same characters. Cregger has pointed to games such as Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8, which moved away from Leon and other familiar heroes. From his point of view, the series has already shown that new characters and stories can exist inside the same world.

That does not mean he has ignored the games. Cregger has said his movie follows the lore while telling its own story. He believes Leon’s story has already been explored through the games and that the movie can add something new instead of simply repeating what players already know.

Whether fans agree will become clear when the film reaches theaters on September 18. Until then, Cregger is stuck in an unusual position. He has to promote a movie that some longtime fans are already unhappy with while also asking those same people to give it a chance.

The big question is whether that gamble will work. If Bryan’s story delivers the survival horror experience fans want, some of the early anger could disappear quickly. But if the movie fails to capture what people love about Resident Evil, Cregger’s decision to move away from the familiar characters could become the biggest problem of all.

For now, the director is standing behind his movie. He knows the criticism is real, he understands why fans are upset, and he still believes they may change their minds once they see what he has made.
