Warner Bros. Has One Movie Left to Rescue a Nightmare Box Office in 2026

Warner Bros. is heading into the final part of 2026 with a problem that would have been hard to imagine just one year ago. The studio was coming off a huge 2025, but instead of building on that success, its movie business has taken a major step backward. Now, with the year entering its final stretch, one movie is carrying a huge amount of pressure on its shoulders: Dune: Part Three.

The contrast between the two years is almost unbelievable. In 2025, Warner Bros. became the first studio to pass $4 billion at the worldwide box office, eventually reaching around $4.38 billion. The company also had a strong awards season, collecting 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. It was the kind of year that made the studio look like it had found the perfect formula for both critical and commercial success. Twelve months later, the picture is much less impressive.

According to box office analyst Gitesh Pandya, Warner Bros. reached September without a single movie earning more than $100 million at the domestic box office. That is a huge change for a studio of this size. Pandya noted that, outside the Covid-affected year of 2020, this is the first time in about 25 years that Warner Bros. has gone this far into a year without having a $100 million domestic release. That puts 2026 in very uncomfortable territory for the studio.

The problem is not just one bad movie. Warner Bros. has struggled to find a reliable hit across much of its schedule. Wuthering Heights was one of the better performers, bringing in about $242 million worldwide, but it did not become the massive breakout the studio needed. Other releases had much tougher runs. The Bride! made only around $24 million worldwide against an $80 million budget, while They Will Kill You earned roughly $19.4 million from a reported $20 million budget.

Supergirl was another major disappointment. The DC movie opened with only about $37.1 million in North America before its theatrical run quickly lost momentum. The End of Oak Street also had a rough start despite featuring stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor. The movie reportedly opened to around $21 million worldwide while carrying a production budget above $80 million. Positive reviews were not enough to turn it into the kind of theatrical success Warner Bros. needed.

What makes the situation even more unusual is how far Warner Bros. has fallen behind its biggest competitors. The other major studios have already managed to put at least two movies above the $100 million domestic mark in 2026. Warner Bros. is the only major studio without one. That means this is not simply a case of a few films underperforming. The studio’s overall theatrical lineup has struggled to connect with a large audience.

The financial results show the same problem. Warner Bros. Discovery reported a 46% year-over-year decline in theatrical revenue during the second quarter of 2026. The comparison is especially painful because the same period in 2025 included big performers such as A Minecraft Movie and Sinners. Those movies helped make last year’s numbers look extremely strong, but they also make this year’s decline look even bigger.

Now the studio is hoping Dune: Part Three can change the conversation. The movie has the kind of franchise power, filmmaker reputation and fan interest that could finally give Warner Bros. the huge theatrical hit it has been missing. If it performs as expected, it could bring in a major amount of money before the year ends and prevent 2026 from becoming an even bigger embarrassment.

There are still other releases that could help. Practical Magic 2 has some potential to surprise, while Bill Hader’s The Cat in the Hat could give Warner Bros. Animation a much-needed boost. Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger is another interesting project, although it is a very different kind of bet. Still, none of these movies carries the same level of pressure as Dune: Part Three.

The good news is that Warner Bros. has a much stronger-looking lineup ahead. The studio already has several major projects planned for 2027, including a Minecraft sequel, another Superman movie and an Ocean’s prequel starring Bradley Cooper and Margot Robbie. After such a difficult year, those films could give the studio a chance to rebuild its theatrical momentum.

For now, though, Warner Bros. has to get through 2026 first. A studio that was celebrating one of its biggest years ever is suddenly fighting to avoid one of its weakest. Everything could come down to whether Dune: Part Three becomes the blockbuster everyone expects it to be.
