‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ Is Taking the Franchise 225 Years Into a Whole New Future

The Avatar universe is about to become almost unrecognizable. The upcoming animated series Avatar: Seven Havens is taking the story farther into the future than the franchise has ever gone before, putting its new heroes in a world that has had more than two centuries to change. That huge time jump could be one of the most important parts of the new series because it gives the creators a chance to build an Avatar world that feels fresh while still keeping the ideas fans know.

According to reporting from Polygon, Seven Havens takes place 225 years after the events of The Legend of Korra. That is a massive jump compared with the 70-year gap between Avatar: The Last Airbender and Korra. It also means the new series will take place roughly 300 years after the story of Aang, making this the farthest point in the franchise’s timeline that viewers have seen on screen.

The story follows Avatar Pavi, who is the latest reincarnation of the Avatar after Korra. Pavi is joined by her long-lost twin sister Nisha, and the two find themselves trying to understand where they came from while also dealing with a world that has been through a major disaster. Their personal mystery is tied to something much bigger, as the sisters are forced to protect what remains of civilization.

The world they enter is not the peaceful future some fans might expect. The official description says a devastating cataclysm has changed the planet, leaving only seven surviving settlements known as the Seven Havens. The Avatar is also no longer viewed as a symbol of hope. Instead, Pavi discovers that many people see the Avatar as the one responsible for destroying humanity.

That change could give the new series a much darker feeling. In the previous shows, the Avatar was usually someone people looked to when the world was in trouble. Pavi may have to deal with people who are afraid of her or actively want her gone. She also has to deal with enemies connected to both humans and spirits, making her role even more complicated.

The decision to jump 225 years into the future also gives creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko a lot of freedom. The pair originally created Avatar: The Last Airbender and later helped build the world that continued through The Legend of Korra. Speaking to Variety when Seven Havens was announced, they talked about how surprising it was that the world they created had continued growing for so long. The new series gives them a chance to explore another completely different era.

There are plenty of questions that come with such a huge time gap. Fans will naturally want to know what happened to the nations, how bending has changed, and whether technology has moved even farther forward. The spirit world is another major mystery, especially after the changes seen during Korra’s story. Seven Havens can answer some of those questions while also avoiding the need to constantly bring back characters from earlier generations.

The new cast is also helping the series move into its own identity. Saheli Khan voices Pavi, while Aishu Devan, Akshay Khanna, and other new performers join the cast. Instead of focusing on familiar characters like Aang, Katara, Zuko, or Korra, the show is building a new group for a completely new era of the Avatar world.

The animation is being handled by French studio La Chouette Compagnie, with an art style influenced by Mœbius and 1990s anime. That should help Seven Havens look different from the earlier shows. Jeremy Zuckerman, who created the music for the previous Avatar animated series, is also returning, giving longtime fans at least one familiar part of the franchise.

The timing is also fitting. Seven Havens is arriving during the 20th anniversary period of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which first premiered in 2005. After two decades of stories, the franchise is not simply going back to its beginning. It is moving far beyond it.

Paramount+ is set to premiere Avatar: Seven Havens on October 9. When it arrives, the biggest mystery may not be who the new Avatar is, but what happened to the world during those 225 years. That enormous gap gives the series a chance to surprise even longtime fans, and Pavi’s journey could introduce the Avatar universe to an era that feels almost completely new.
