Liam Neeson’s New Movie ‘The Fix’ Just Got Demolished by Critics on Rotten Tomatoes

Liam Neeson’s latest action movie, The Fix, has arrived in theaters, but critics are not exactly rushing to praise it. The new thriller, which also stars Zachary Levi, has opened with a very low score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the rougher entries in Neeson’s long list of action movies.

The Fix was released on September 11 and is directed by Guy Moshe. The movie brings together a group of former CIA operatives who are trying to deal with the mistakes of their past. Neeson plays Larry, an older member of the team who acts as a mentor, while Levi plays Tucker, the man leading the group.

The story starts in Kabul in 2021, during the chaotic final days of the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan. Tucker and his team are sent to rescue an informant and his family. Things quickly fall apart, and the failed mission leaves the team dealing with serious consequences.

Larry is especially affected by what happened. The Hollywood Reporter says the character later struggles with migraines and memory problems, adding another personal issue to an already troubled team. Years after the Afghanistan mission, the former operatives are brought back together for another dangerous job.

This time, their target is Tehran. The team learns about a former CIA asset in Iran who knows where a large hidden fortune can be found. But getting the information will not be easy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the woman agrees to help only if Tucker first gets her daughter, an anti-Revolutionary Guard activist, out of Iran.

That turns the mission into a mix of a rescue operation and a heist. On paper, it sounds like the kind of setup that could make for a fast and exciting action thriller. Critics, however, say the movie struggles to make all of these ideas work together.

Variety criticized the movie’s trip from Kabul to Tehran, calling the story confusing and saying it never reaches the political or emotional payoff it appears to be building toward. The film also has a long running time of 2 hours and 22 minutes, which several reviewers felt made its problems even more obvious.

Zachary Levi has received some of the more positive comments. JoBlo said Levi plays Tucker as a cold and calculating character and suggested that many of the problems with Tucker come from the script rather than Levi’s performance.

Not everyone agreed. ScreenRant had a more mixed reaction to Levi, while TheWrap was much harsher. TheWrap described his performance as stiff and compared his constant wide-eyed expression to someone who appears frozen in place.

Neeson also has his share of criticism. FandomWire took issue with the movie’s final section, saying it throws too many twists and red herrings at the audience. According to the review, the later surprises do little to actually improve the story.

Flickering Myth also criticized the opening war sequence and the way the movie presents the conflict in Afghanistan. These complaints add to a larger problem that appears throughout many of the reviews: The Fix seems to have too many ideas packed into one movie.

Punch Drunk Critics argued that there is a better movie somewhere inside The Fix, but said director Guy Moshe fills it with too much material. The review also suggested that the film spends too much time on moral questions instead of giving its action and heist elements enough room to shine.

The biggest warning sign is the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score. The Fix currently sits at just 10 percent on the Tomatometer from 21 reviews, putting it firmly in rotten territory. That number could still change as more reviews arrive.

Audience reactions are also still too early to judge. The movie has fewer than 50 verified user ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, so it remains unclear whether regular moviegoers will be kinder to The Fix than professional critics.

For Neeson fans, the new thriller may still be worth a look. But if the goal was to deliver another memorable late-career action movie, the early reviews suggest The Fix has missed its target.
