Sebastian Stan Says ‘The Batman: Part II’ Still Has a Long Way to Go & Gives a Storyline Hint

Fans may still have a long wait before they finally see The Batman: Part II, and it sounds like the cast has an equally long road ahead of them. Sebastian Stan has given a small update on the production, and his answer makes it clear that Matt Reeves’ next trip to Gotham is going to take some time to finish.

Stan is one of the biggest new names joining the sequel. The actor is best known for playing Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, in the Marvel movies. Now he is stepping into the darker world created by director Matt Reeves, where Robert Pattinson is returning as Bruce Wayne. Stan has been linked to the role of Harvey Dent, although neither the actor nor the studio has officially confirmed exactly who he is playing.

During an interview with ScreenRant, Stan was asked how much longer he expects to be working on The Batman: Part II. His answer was short but telling. “A very long time, yep,” the actor said. He then described the remaining production as “a long winter.” The comment may have simply been about the amount of filming he still has to do, but Batman fans quickly found another possible meaning in those words.

The reason is the snowy setting that has already been teased for the movie. Matt Reeves previously shared camera test images showing the Batmobile moving through snow. The director used the hashtag “SnowTires” with the post, immediately sending fans into detective mode. Gotham covered in snow is a very different look from the city we saw in the first movie, and fans are already wondering what it could mean for the story.

One of the biggest theories involves Mr. Freeze. The classic Batman villain has never appeared in Reeves’ version of Gotham, and a frozen setting naturally made fans wonder whether the character could finally be introduced. There is still no official confirmation that Mr. Freeze will appear, however. The snowy city could simply be part of the atmosphere Reeves wants for the sequel.

The winter look has also reminded some fans of Batman Returns, Tim Burton’s 1992 movie starring Michael Keaton as Batman. That film famously gave Gotham a dark, snowy appearance, making the comparison easy to understand. Still, there is no indication that Reeves is trying to copy Burton’s movie.

The sequel has plenty of returning stars. Pattinson will once again play Bruce Wayne, while Jeffrey Wright is back as James Gordon. Andy Serkis will return as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell will again play Oswald “Oz” Cobb. Reeves is directing the movie and is writing the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin.

There are also several major new cast members joining the story. Along with Stan, the film includes Scarlett Johansson, Jayme Lawson and Charles Dance. Production has been taking place in England, including filming in Liverpool, adding to the growing sense that Reeves is taking his time to build the next chapter.

Stan has also spoken about preparing for his mysterious new role. He has mentioned meeting with the hair and makeup teams, suggesting that his character could look very different from the roles audiences are used to seeing him play. That has only made the Harvey Dent rumors more interesting, although Stan has continued to avoid confirming the character.

The long wait may be frustrating for fans, but Reeves appears to be sticking with the slow approach that helped make The Batman stand out. The first movie took its time building Gotham, its characters and its dark mood, and the sequel seems to be following the same path.

The Batman: Part II is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 1, 2027. That gives Reeves and the cast plenty of time to finish filming and post-production. Until then, fans will likely keep looking at every photo, interview and comment for clues about what is really happening in Gotham.
