‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’’ Paul Wesley Calls Bringing the Full Enterprise Crew Together “Truly Magical”

Paul Wesley has spent the last few seasons giving fans a younger version of James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Now, as the series gets closer to its final chapter, Wesley is finally reaching one of the biggest moments in Kirk’s journey. The character is set to become captain of the USS Enterprise, taking over the famous ship from Christopher Pike and moving closer to the version of Kirk that fans already know from the original Star Trek series.

That change has been building for some time, but there is another major moment that Wesley seems to have enjoyed even more. In a new interview with ScreenRant, the actor talked about his favorite experience while playing Kirk. He could not reveal too much because the scene is connected to the ending of the show, but he did share what made the moment so special. For Wesley, it was finally seeing the classic Enterprise crew together in the same place.

“There was something truly magical about having these characters on screen together,” Wesley told ScreenRant. His comments were made while discussing the arrival of two important characters from the original Star Trek crew. Thomas Jane is playing Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, while Kai Murakami has joined the show as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu. Their appearances give the series a chance to bring together a group of characters that fans have known for decades, but in a much earlier part of their lives.

The new additions are especially important because they complete most of the familiar Enterprise lineup. Wesley’s Kirk can now be seen alongside Ethan Peck’s Spock, Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura, Martin Quinn’s Scotty and Jess Bush’s Nurse Chapel. Seeing these characters together is something Strange New Worlds has been slowly working toward since the show began. There is still one familiar name missing from the group, however. Pavel Chekov does not appear because the character joins the Enterprise later in the Star Trek timeline.

According to Wesley, putting the group together was more than just a big moment for the fans. He could feel something changing when the actors were finally sharing the screen as the crew audiences recognize from the original series. He described the experience as having a special energy, saying there was clearly “something working” once everyone was together. After spending years watching these characters develop separately, the cast finally got to experience what it was like to have the full group in one place.

The moment also shows how much care Wesley has put into his version of Kirk. Instead of trying to copy William Shatner’s famous performance, he has always wanted to make the younger Kirk feel like his own character. Wesley has previously explained that he did not want to simply imitate Shatner, especially because this version of Kirk is still learning and growing into the captain he will eventually become. Shatner himself has reportedly supported Wesley’s approach, with the two actors speaking several times during Wesley’s time on the series.

That makes Kirk’s upcoming promotion even more important. Season 4 has been moving the character toward his future as captain, while the already filmed fifth season will bring the story to an end. By that point, the show will have taken its time showing how Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Scotty, Chapel and the rest of the crew became the team fans already know. The final episodes now have the difficult job of connecting that journey with the beginning of the original Star Trek era.

Wesley’s comments also suggest that the final season will give fans something they have been waiting to see for a long time. The classic Enterprise crew is finally coming together, and for the actor who has spent years playing Kirk, that reunion appears to have been just as meaningful behind the scenes as it will be for viewers. With Strange New Worlds approaching its ending, the show seems ready to make its final trip toward the Enterprise crew that helped define Star Trek for generations.
