‘The Odyssey’ Refuses to Slow Down as Nolan Epic Sets Another Box Office Record

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is proving that some movies can stay strong at the box office long after most blockbusters start losing steam. The three-hour epic has now reached another major milestone, showing just how much staying power it has had since arriving in theaters in July. Instead of seeing its audience disappear after a few weeks, the movie has continued bringing in more than $1 million every day at the domestic box office.

According to the latest box office figures, The Odyssey has now recorded 56 straight days with daily earnings above $1 million in the United States. That gives the movie the longest streak of its kind ever recorded for an R-rated film. It has passed Obsession, which previously held the record with a 55-day run. For a movie that is already several weeks into its theatrical release, that kind of consistency is unusual.

The film is also standing out because it remains the only major holdover still making more than $1 million per day in the U.S. box office. On its eighth Thursday in theaters, The Odyssey earned another $1.2 million. That was a 33.1 percent drop from the previous Thursday, which is not a bad result considering the movie had also lost more than 300 theaters by the following Friday.

The latest numbers put The Odyssey in some very impressive company. Its $1.2 million eighth-Thursday result matches Finding Nemo and puts it close to several movies that have become major parts of movie history. Avatar remains at the top of that group with $2.1 million, followed by E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial with $1.9 million. Titanic and Top Gun: Maverick both reached $1.7 million, while The Phantom Menace reached $1.4 million.

That comparison makes the performance even more impressive because The Odyssey is not a short, easy-to-watch blockbuster. It is a long R-rated movie based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, and its story is built around a large-scale theatrical experience. Yet audiences have continued showing up well into its second month. The movie’s domestic total has now reached $593.1 million, meaning the $600 million mark is very close.

One major reason for the film’s continued run is its strong presence in premium formats. IMAX has continued making room for The Odyssey, with its run now extended through the end of September. That is a big deal for a movie that has already been in theaters for months. Nolan designed the film with large-format presentation in mind, and the continued demand suggests many viewers still want to experience it on the biggest screen possible.

The extended IMAX run could also help the movie push beyond its current box office expectations. Current projections put its final domestic total somewhere between $615 million and $630 million. Those numbers are not locked in, though, and another strong stretch could push the final result higher. The movie has already shown that it can perform better than expected, so another adjustment would not be surprising if audiences keep returning.

The Odyssey is also benefiting from Nolan’s reputation as a filmmaker whose movies often become events. Audiences know that his films are designed to be seen in theaters, and that reputation may be helping the movie stay in the conversation even as newer releases arrive. Strong word of mouth can also play a role, especially for a film that depends heavily on scale and spectacle.

For now, The Odyssey has already secured its place as one of the strongest long-running releases of the year. Its 56-day streak has set a new record for an R-rated movie, while its domestic total is closing in on $600 million. With IMAX screenings continuing into the fall, Nolan’s latest epic still has plenty of time to add to an already remarkable theatrical run.
