Sebastian Stan Says ‘The Batman: Part II’ Could Be on the Level of ‘The Godfather Part II’

Sebastian Stan has given fans another reason to get excited about The Batman: Part II, and this time it has nothing to do with a casting rumor or a leaked set photo. The actor has made a huge comparison about the sequel, saying the experience of working on Matt Reeves’ movie has reminded him of one of the most famous sequels in movie history. His comments are already getting plenty of attention because the movie he named is not just any sequel.

While speaking with Variety during the Toronto International Film Festival, where he was promoting his Cannes-winning movie Fjord, Stan talked about what it has been like working on The Batman: Part II. Instead of simply saying that the movie was going well, he compared the experience to making The Godfather Part II, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 crime drama that is often considered one of the greatest sequels ever made. Stan summed up his feeling about the project by saying, “I think we’re making f**ing ‘Godfather Part Two.’”* Variety reported his comments during the interview.

That is obviously a massive statement, and Stan seemed to know it. He made it clear that he was not trying to create unrealistic expectations for the movie, but his excitement still came through. According to Variety, Stan believes Reeves has spent years carefully building the sequel, and that effort has created something that feels special from the inside. The actor has also praised the grounded style of the project, which appears to be one of the main reasons he wanted to be involved.

The comparison is especially interesting because The Batman was already very different from many modern superhero movies. Reeves treated Bruce Wayne’s world more like a crime thriller, with a heavy focus on mystery, investigation, corruption, and the darker side of Gotham. Robert Pattinson’s Batman was not presented as an unstoppable superhero. Instead, he was still learning how to operate as a crime fighter and was deeply connected to the city’s problems. Stan’s comments suggest that the sequel is continuing that approach rather than suddenly turning into a standard superhero adventure.

Stan has also managed to keep his own character mostly secret. He has been widely rumored to be playing Harvey Dent, but he has not officially confirmed that role. During interviews, he has reportedly been careful whenever questions about Dent come up. That secrecy fits perfectly with Reeves’ overall approach to the movie, which has kept major story details away from the public for a long time.

The actor also explained how he ended up joining the DC project. According to his comments, Reeves had seen Stan’s performance in The Apprentice and was impressed by his work. Around the same period, Stan decided to make his interest in the DC universe known and contacted DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn to let him know that he was available if the right role came along. That direct approach eventually helped lead him to The Batman: Part II.

There is still plenty of debate over whether the sequel can really reach the level Stan is talking about. The Godfather Part II is famous for expanding its original story while also standing on its own as a powerful film. Comparing any modern blockbuster to it is going to raise eyebrows, especially when The Batman: Part II is still in production and has not even shown audiences what it has yet.

Still, Stan’s comments offer an interesting look at the confidence inside the cast. He is not describing the movie as simply another big DC release. He seems to believe Reeves is building something much more ambitious, with a strong story and a very specific tone. That could be an important sign for fans who enjoyed the first movie and have been waiting years for the follow-up.

For now, Reeves is keeping the details locked down, and fans will have to wait before they can decide whether Stan’s comparison was justified.
