Gary Oldman Thinks HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Could Finally Give Fans the Full Story

The original Harry Potter movies became a huge part of pop culture, but even the most loyal fans know that the films could not include everything from J.K. Rowling’s books. With limited time in theaters, major storylines, character moments, and smaller details had to be removed. Now, as HBO prepares its new Harry Potter series, Gary Oldman believes the television format could solve one of the biggest problems the movies had.

Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the original films, recently discussed the upcoming series with Entertainment Weekly at HBO’s studio during the Toronto International Film Festival. He believes the new version has a major advantage because it will have much more time to tell the story. Instead of trying to fit an entire book into a movie that lasts a few hours, HBO can spend a full season exploring the material.

That difference could be especially important for fans who always wanted the screen version to stay closer to the books. Oldman pointed out that the movies had to make difficult choices because of their running times. Even when the filmmakers wanted to include more material, there was only so much they could fit into a traditional theatrical release. According to comments reported by Entertainment Weekly, Oldman said the new series plans to follow the books “pretty much word-for-word.” He added that, as a viewer, he thinks that approach would be more satisfying.

The actor has a personal reason for understanding what was lost along the way. Sirius Black became one of the most popular characters in the Wizarding World, but Oldman has previously admitted that he wished the role had been given more to do. Sirius was introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and became an important part of Harry’s story, but his role became much smaller in later movies. By the time Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix arrived, Sirius had only a limited amount of screen time before his dramatic death.

A television series could give a future Sirius much more room to develop. The character has an important history with Harry’s parents, his time in Azkaban, and his complicated relationship with Harry. Those parts of the story were difficult to fully explore in the movies, but HBO will have the benefit of several episodes each season. That could allow the new series to spend more time on characters who were sometimes pushed into the background.

Oldman has also made it clear that his comments are not meant as an attack on the original movies. He has spoken positively about being part of the franchise and understands how special the films became for audiences around the world. The original cast helped turn Harry Potter into one of the biggest movie franchises ever, and replacing those performances will be a major challenge for the new series.

HBO is now preparing to introduce an entirely new group of actors to the Wizarding World. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, while Arabella Stanton takes on Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall. The new actors will have the difficult job of creating their own versions of characters that audiences have known for years.

One major question is still unanswered. HBO has not announced who will play Sirius Black in the new series, so Oldman’s possible connection to the project remains uncertain. Given that the new story will focus on younger versions of the characters, it is unlikely that he will return as Sirius. Still, his comments show that he is interested in seeing what HBO can do with the material.

The series is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026 on HBO Max. Each season is expected to focus on one of the original books, giving the story far more space than the movies had. That approach could allow HBO to include characters, relationships, and smaller moments that longtime fans have been waiting to see.

Whether that will make the series better is still impossible to know. The original films have a huge advantage because of their beloved cast, music, sets, and nostalgic connection to an entire generation. But Oldman’s argument is simple: the new series does not have to rush. If HBO really uses the extra time to explore the books in greater detail, fans could finally get a version of Harry Potter that feels closer to the complete story they remember from the page.
