‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Just Gave Fans Another Look at Doctor Doom’s Mysterious Coven of Witches

Marvel Studios has spent much of this year turning Doctor Doom’s inner circle into one of the biggest ongoing mysteries surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Robert Downey Jr.’s take on the iconic villain has dominated nearly every trailer, poster, and convention reveal tied to the film, but a recent addition to that promotional rollout has fans just as fixated on the mysterious figures standing behind him.

That addition first surfaced at San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel quietly placed a costume labeled “Latverian Witch” on display alongside other Doomsday props. The reveal expanded soon after into three separate robed figures shown in deep green, purple, and orange, each fully concealing the wearer’s identity and echoing Doctor Doom’s own visual style down to the diamond-motif detailing.

Now, new promotional artwork has resurfaced that same trio of hooded witches once again, this time framed beneath the ominous tagline “Doom Has No Rivals,” with Doctor Doom himself rendered in dramatic silhouette beneath them. The image reinforces just how central these mysterious followers have become to the film’s marketing, even as Marvel continues withholding any concrete details about who’s actually hiding beneath the robes.

That silence has left fans to fill in the blanks with plenty of their own theories. The most obvious guess floating around points to Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, better known as the Scarlet Witch, given the character’s deep ties to chaos magic and the franchise’s ongoing willingness to bring back seemingly concluded storylines through the multiverse.

Other theories point toward less expected candidates. Some fans have suggested the robes could belong to Wiccan, the young witch introduced in ‘Agatha All Along,’ while others have floated Charlize Theron’s Clea, the sorceress who’s remained mostly dormant since her brief mid-credits appearance in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ There’s also a compelling comic-accurate theory pointing to Cynthia von Doom, Victor von Doom’s own mother, whose tragic backstory involving dark magic could make her a fitting addition to her son’s inner circle.

Adding another layer to the speculation, some fans have pointed back to ‘Agatha All Along,’ which established that a proper witches’ coven traditionally requires five members, each wielding a different kind of magical specialty. Since only three robed figures have been shown so far, in green, purple, and orange, that detail has fueled theories that Marvel may still be holding back reveals of additional witches in blue and red.

Fans specifically connecting the blue theory to Wiccan and the red theory to a returning Scarlet Witch variant suggests the studio could be building toward a genuinely stacked magical ensemble surrounding Doom, rather than a single mysterious follower. Whether that theory holds up remains entirely speculative until Marvel offers any official confirmation.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and set to unite heroes from across the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men corners of the franchise, the film’s marketing has leaned heavily into mystery as its central hook heading toward release. Doctor Doom’s expanding circle of magical followers fits neatly into that pattern, giving fans one more thread to obsess over as the countdown continues.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters December 18, and given how much attention Marvel has poured into keeping these witches’ true identities under wraps, it seems unlikely the studio will offer any real answers before the film’s actual release.
