Zack Snyder’s ‘The Last Photograph’ Just Got Torn Apart at Its TIFF Premiere

Zack Snyder has spent the past several years bouncing between massive blockbuster ambitions, first with his DC franchise work, then with two large-scale Netflix productions in ‘Rebel Moon.’ ‘The Last Photograph’ represented something entirely different, a smaller, more personal passion project that Snyder and longtime collaborator Kurt Johnstad have reportedly been developing since as far back as 2011.

That long gestation made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival feel like a genuinely significant moment for Snyder, marking his first true indie effort after years spent working almost exclusively within franchise filmmaking. Notably, there was no official press screening arranged in Toronto, meaning critics who wanted to see the film had to purchase tickets alongside everyone else, a choice that felt deliberate given how consistently unkind critics have historically been toward Snyder’s work.

That skepticism proved well-founded almost immediately. The first reactions out of the John Bassett Theatre following Sunday night’s premiere were overwhelmingly brutal, with several attendees describing it as among the worst films they’d seen at this year’s festival.

Next Best Picture’s Matt Neglia offered one of the more measured takedowns, acknowledging that Snyder clearly believes he’s made something far more profound and artful than his previous work, and in some ways he has, before still calling it “a tedious, frustrating, and grueling experience,” he wrote, and “easily the worst film I’ve seen at TIFF so far.” Other reactions were considerably harsher, with one critic bluntly declaring the film should get Snyder sent to “directors jail permanently,” while another described it as “unabashedly sh*t on every level.”

Amid the pile-on, one notable outlier emerged. Deadline’s own review broke sharply from the consensus, describing the film as a violent but surprisingly human action drama, offering some of the only genuinely positive framing to come out of the premiere so far.

A more nuanced middle ground came from PunchDrunkCritics, which awarded the film a modest 2.5 out of 5 while acknowledging the deeply personal nature of the project. That review praised the genuinely beautiful cinematography, shot by Snyder himself, along with a committed lead performance from star Stuart Martin, even while conceding the film’s opening act ranks among the worst stretches of filmmaking Snyder has ever produced. According to that same review, the film’s middle section actually becomes quite compelling, particularly for longtime fans of Snyder’s blockbuster sensibilities, before the final stretch stumbles with a payoff many found unsatisfying.

Other reviews leaned harder into criticism of the film’s tonal choices, with some describing it as unintentionally comedic despite its self-serious ambitions, pointing to excessive violence and nudity used in ways that undercut rather than enhanced the story’s emotional weight. Several critics compared its melodramatic plotting, involving an affair and a fixation on an old photograph, to something closer to a soap opera than the prestige drama Snyder appeared to be reaching for.

With no distribution deal currently in place and only a single scheduled screening at TIFF, ‘The Last Photograph’s’ path forward remains genuinely uncertain. For a film built on years of personal investment from Snyder, the harsh reception adds real pressure to whatever comes next for the project, whether that means further festival play, a straightforward release, or continued searching for a distributor willing to take it on.

Given how polarizing Snyder’s work has always been among critics versus general audiences, it’s entirely possible this response pattern repeats itself once wider audiences eventually get a chance to see the film for themselves.
