‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is So Close to History, It’ll Have To Wait Until Tuesday To Claim It

Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Spider-Man has spent the better part of two months rewriting what a modern blockbuster run can look like, methodically climbing toward one box office milestone after another. What started as a record-breaking opening weekend has since evolved into a genuine assault on box office history itself.

That assault reached a major checkpoint back in late August, when ‘Brand New Day’ passed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time globally, running roughly $40 million ahead of where ‘The Force Awakens’ had stood domestically at the same point in its own theatrical journey. Now, the film has arrived agonizingly close to claiming that crown. ‘Brand New Day’ grossed a strong $8.4 million over its seventh three-day weekend, a steep 53.9% drop from its previous holiday-boosted frame, despite losing 217 theaters on Friday alone. That performance pushed its domestic total to $935.2 million, putting it just $1.5 million shy of ‘The Force Awakens” $936.6 million record.

That gap is small enough that the film is now expected to officially claim the all-time domestic crown sometime Tuesday, once weekday earnings push it past the finish line. For context, that seventh-weekend drop actually compares favorably to other recent blockbusters at the same stage of release, with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ dropping 39.4% to $4.9 million and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ dropping 54.7% to $7 million during their own respective seventh weekends.

What makes ‘Brand New Day’s’ run so remarkable isn’t just its raw totals, but how consistently it’s outpaced its own competition along the way. The film’s current domestic total now sits roughly $111 million ahead of where ‘Endgame’ had reached at the exact same point in its release, despite ‘Brand New Day’ having started its own run months later in the calendar year.

That pace has been evident from the very beginning. The film opened to a record-setting $360.1 million domestic weekend, surpassing ‘Endgame’s’ previous $357.1 million debut, before going on to become the fastest movie ever to reach $900 million domestically, hitting that mark in just 36 days compared to the 50 days it took ‘The Force Awakens’ to get there.

Remarkably, the film is still playing in roughly 3,520 North American theaters, an unusually high count for a movie more than 40 days into its release, actually exceeding the theater counts both ‘Endgame’ and ‘The Force Awakens’ maintained at similar points in their own runs. Backed by a strong “A” CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences, the film now appears to be eyeing a final domestic total somewhere around $960 million once its theatrical run eventually winds down.

For a franchise that’s spent over two decades as a reliable box office performer without ever quite reaching the absolute top of the all-time charts, watching Holland’s Spider-Man close in on the single biggest domestic record in cinema history marks an almost unthinkable capstone to this particular chapter. The wait for official confirmation may only be a matter of days now, but the outcome already feels like a foregone conclusion.
