Jessica Chastain Faces Off Against Herself in the Chilling New ‘Other Mommy’ Trailer

Horror sequels are one thing, but there’s a certain kind of terror in an actress returning to the genre again and again, each time playing an increasingly unsettling version of motherhood gone wrong. Jessica Chastain has quietly built that exact reputation over the past decade, and her latest project leans directly into it.

The Oscar winner has already tackled maternal horror in films like ‘Mama’ and ‘Take Shelter,’ but her newest release pushes that theme into genuinely uncanny territory by having her confront a version of herself. Director Rob Savage, known for ‘Host’ and ‘The Boogeyman,’ has built an entire film around the unsettling premise of a mother’s exact double slowly infiltrating a family’s life.

That film, ‘Other Mommy,’ now has a fully released trailer, and it delivers exactly the kind of dread fans have come to expect. The story follows Bela, an eight-year-old girl living in a home already strained by marital problems, who begins communicating with a sinister entity emerging from her closet that looks precisely like her mother.

Chastain takes on the dual role of Ursula, Bela’s mother, and the “Other Mommy” entity itself, a manifestation designed to blur the line between comfort and terror for both Bela and the audience. The trailer opens deceptively gently, with Ursula coming home during her lunch break to spend time with her daughter, before subtle wrongness starts creeping in.

According to ScreenRant’s breakdown of the footage, Ursula’s behavior grows increasingly strange as the trailer progresses, at one point reminiscing with unsettling intimacy about “when you and I were one person” while asking Bela if she remembers existing before being in her mother’s womb. That kind of quietly disturbing dialogue sets the tone for a film clearly more interested in psychological dread than jump scares alone, though the trailer has plenty of those too.

The supporting cast includes Jay Duplass as Bela’s father, Russ, alongside Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, and Karen Allen as Bela’s grandmother. Arabella Olivia Clark stars as young Bela, carrying much of the film’s emotional weight as she navigates the increasingly blurred line between her real mother and the entity that’s taken her place.

‘Other Mommy’ is based on Josh Malerman’s novel ‘Incidents Around the House,’ the author’s follow-up to his breakout hit ‘Bird Box,’ which became one of his most popular books following that earlier success. James Wan produces through Blumhouse’s Atomic Monster banner, pairing Savage’s directorial sensibilities with one of horror’s most consistently successful production outfits.

The film’s marketing rollout has been notably unconventional, with the trailer initially playing exclusively during theatrical screenings of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ before its wider online release generated significant buzz on its own. Originally slated for a May 2026 release, Universal pushed ‘Other Mommy’ back to October 9, positioning it squarely within peak Halloween season alongside a crowded slate of horror competitors.
