‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 Pulls Off a Stunning Comeback After a Rocky Netflix Debut
Streaming premieres can be brutally unforgiving, especially for returning shows facing the weight of a beloved first season. Guy Ritchie’s stylish crime drama learned that lesson the hard way when it finally returned to Netflix after a lengthy wait, only to stumble right out of the gate.
‘The Gentlemen’ had built a genuinely devoted fanbase following its 2024 debut, with fans eagerly anticipating the return of Eddie Horniman and Susie Glass after a two-and-a-half-year gap between seasons. That anticipation made the show’s rocky opening weekend all the more surprising, with Season 2 debuting to nearly 50 percent fewer views than its predecessor had pulled in during the same window.
Now the show has staged a genuine turnaround. ‘The Gentlemen’ Season 2 saw its viewership increase 48 percent during its second week on Netflix, while Season 1 simultaneously climbed back onto the charts as new fans caught themselves up on the story before diving into the sequel.
The numbers behind that initial slump were stark. Season 1 pulled in 12.2 million views (using Netflix’s CVE metric) during its first four days on the platform back in 2024, debuting at No. 1 on the streamer’s English TV chart. Season 2, by comparison, opened with just 6.7 million views during the same window, landing at No. 3 and marking a 45 percent audience decline between seasons.
Part of that gap appeared tied to timing rather than any drop in genuine interest. The long wait between seasons seemed to send a meaningful chunk of the audience back to revisit Season 1 first, which reentered Netflix’s global Top 10 the same week the new season launched, pulling in 3.2 million views of its own as viewers refreshed their memory of the story before jumping into the follow-up.
Notably, the initial slump had nothing to do with quality. Season 2 debuted with a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes before settling into the low 80s, ultimately landing at 81 to 82 percent, a clear improvement over both Season 1 and the original 2019 film, each of which sat at 75 percent.

By its second week, ‘The Gentlemen’ had fully turned things around, climbing all the way to No. 1 on Netflix’s global viewership chart and topping the English-language TV rankings in numerous countries, including the UK, Spain, Iceland, and Australia. That rebound suggests the delayed word-of-mouth momentum, combined with fans finishing their Season 1 rewatch, finally caught up with the new season’s actual audience.
The new season, which picks up one year after Eddie and Susie joined forces within Bobby’s criminal empire, expands the story’s scope beyond the English countryside and into Italy, introducing new international stakes to the family’s ongoing entanglement with organized crime. Series creator Guy Ritchie’s heavier workload on other projects in the interim between seasons had previously been cited as one factor behind the show’s initial lower priority and delayed turnaround.

Netflix had already renewed the series for a third season before Season 2 even premiered, a vote of confidence that now looks considerably more justified given the show’s strong second-week recovery. With critics largely praising the new season’s quality and audiences ultimately following suit once the dust settled, ‘The Gentlemen’ appears well-positioned heading into its next chapter.
