Zach Cregger Has the Perfect Fan-Cast Pick for a Live-Action Lady Dimitrescu, and Fans Agree

Video game villains often become bigger cultural phenomena than the games themselves, and few recent examples illustrate that quite as well as this towering, aristocratic horror icon. Since her 2021 debut, she’s spawned countless cosplay tributes, memes, and genuine fan devotion, all built around a character who never even factored into a film adaptation until now, when the director behind the franchise’s newest movie decided to weigh in.

Zach Cregger’s new ‘Resident Evil‘ film, releasing September 18, deliberately steers away from directly adapting any single game or using its most established characters, instead following an original protagonist navigating an outbreak-fueled nightmare. That means Lady Dimitrescu, the towering vampire-like noblewoman from 2021’s ‘Resident Evil Village,’ doesn’t appear anywhere in Cregger’s version. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from wondering who he’d cast if given the chance.

Speaking with PEDESTRIAN.TV, Cregger didn’t hesitate when asked who should play a live-action Lady Dimitrescu. “Christina Hendricks,” he said. “I think I would go for that. That feels about right to me.”

Cregger’s choice draws directly on Hendricks’s most iconic role, her Emmy-nominated turn as Joan Holloway on AMC’s ‘Mad Men,’ a performance that established her as a genuine master of commanding, magnetic screen presence. That same period-drama sensibility and theatrical intensity that made Joan such a memorable character translates naturally to Lady Dimitrescu’s own larger-than-life aristocratic menace.

The interviewer also floated their own suggestion, Joan Cusack, which Cregger enthusiastically embraced as well, saying he’d “watch her do anything” and calling the idea “amazing.” That kind of open, engaged response to hypothetical casting fits Cregger’s broader public persona throughout this film’s press cycle, having previously described himself as genuinely obsessed with the source games, claiming he’s played through ‘Resident Evil 4’ upwards of a hundred times.

Lady Dimitrescu was originally voiced and motion-captured by actress Maggie Robertson, whose performance won Best Performance at The Game Awards. Robertson has previously told IGN she’d enthusiastically return to the role “a hundred times” if Capcom ever called for further appearances, whether within future games or any potential live-action or animated adaptation down the line.

It’s worth stressing that Cregger’s comments represent nothing more than hypothetical fan casting at this stage, not any kind of official announcement. There’s currently no confirmed plan for a ‘Resident Evil Village’ film adaptation, and Hendricks herself hasn’t been formally attached to any such project. Cregger’s own film sticks entirely to original characters and storytelling, deliberately avoiding direct adaptations of specific games in favor of capturing the broader feeling of playing through the franchise.

Given the character’s design, born from Capcom’s desire to create a charismatic femme fatale inspired partly by figures like Morticia Addams, and Hendricks’s proven ability to command a room with a single glance, it’s easy to see why fans have latched onto this particular pairing with genuine enthusiasm. Whether Capcom or Sony ever pursue a ‘Village’-focused adaptation featuring the character remains entirely speculative, but Cregger’s endorsement has already given fans plenty to fantasy-cast around in the meantime.

For a director who’s clearly demonstrated a genuine, encyclopedic love for this franchise throughout his press tour, having him weigh in on one of the series’ most beloved characters feels like a natural extension of that passion, even if it’s just a hypothetical answer to a fun interview question.
