Fake J.K. Rowling Quote About Paapa Essiedu’s Snape Casting Spreads Online, Then Gets Debunked

A quote attributed to J.K. Rowling praising Paapa Essiedu’s performance as Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series circulated widely on social media this week — but the quote is fabricated, and Rowling never said it.

The fabricated statement claimed Rowling had called Essiedu “brilliant” in his early scenes and predicted he would “win people over straight away” once critics saw his performance. Users quickly flagged the quote as fake, and outlets covering the story confirmed Rowling made no such comment. Rowling has not addressed the fabricated quote publicly as of this reporting.

Rowling’s real public comments on the casting have been more measured. In May 2025, after online speculation that she might try to have Essiedu removed from the role over his support for trans rights, Rowling wrote on X: “I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series, and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did. I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.”

Essiedu, known for “I May Destroy You” and “The Lazarus Project,” was cast as Snape in HBO’s book-by-book “Harry Potter” adaptation, joining John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as McGonagall. The series is set for release later in 2026. Since his casting was announced in December 2024, Essiedu — the first Black actor to play the role — has faced sustained criticism from some fans who argue his casting departs from Snape’s description in Rowling’s books as pale-skinned with a hooked nose and greasy hair. Much of the backlash has been described by commentators and by HBO talent as racially motivated.

Essiedu has said the response has gone beyond casting criticism. Speaking to The Sunday Times of London, he said: “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you.'” He added that he has not reported the threats, questioning what good it would do to have “some 17-year-old boy being put in jail for two weeks.” He has also described the overall reaction to his casting as “extreme” and said it has affected him emotionally, telling reporters that nobody should have to encounter this level of hostility “for doing their job.”

Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the original film franchise, defended Essiedu during a panel at Fan Expo Denver, saying: “Paapa Essiedu is one of the best actors I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve seen some people online who are being rude about him. What they’re being is racist.” HBO CEO Casey Bloys has also acknowledged that the production has increased security around the cast in response to the threats.

Recent promotional footage for the series has reportedly softened some fan reactions, though the casting debate remains active online. The fake Rowling quote appears to be the latest flashpoint in a controversy that has run for more than a year, illustrating how misinformation can spread quickly in the middle of an already contentious public debate.
