‘The Odyssey’ Director Christopher Nolan Just Made It Clear He’s Not Done With Christian Bale Yet

Some director-actor pairings become so synonymous with a genre that fans spend years hoping for a reunion long after the collaboration has quietly ended. Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale built exactly that kind of legacy together, reshaping the superhero movie with a trilogy that still gets cited as the gold standard more than a decade later.

Nolan has spent the past several weeks in the press cycle for his latest epic, fielding questions about everything from ancient mythology to IMAX film technology. Somewhere in the middle of all that promotion, though, the conversation naturally drifted back to one of his most storied collaborators.

Christopher Nolan says he would love to work with Christian Bale again on another film. “He’s one of the great actors of his generation, and I’ve had tremendous experiences with him,” Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter.

The comments came as Nolan was promoting ‘The Odyssey,’ his mythic action epic based on Homer’s foundational saga, which opened in theaters on July 17. The film, shot across the globe using new IMAX film technology, stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, none of whom happen to be Bale.

Nolan and Bale have worked together four times, most notably across the ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy, where Bale’s take on Bruce Wayne redefined what a comic book movie could look like on screen. Their partnership also produced ‘The Prestige,’ the dueling-magicians thriller that has since become a fan favorite in Nolan’s filmography.

It has been more than a decade since the two last collaborated on ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and in that stretch both men have stayed remarkably busy. Nolan has since delivered ‘Interstellar,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘Tenet,’ the Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer,’ and now ‘The Odyssey,’ while Bale has built out a career spanning everything from prestige dramas to Marvel villainy.

This is not the first time one half of the duo has expressed interest in reuniting. Bale has previously said he would be open to working with Nolan again, telling THR in an earlier interview, “I would love to work with Chris again. He’s an extraordinary filmmaker, and I’ve got very good memories of working with him.” Bale has also indicated he would even step back into the Batman cowl if Nolan were the one directing.

Nolan’s fondness for his past collaborators is well documented, and Bale has long sat near the top of that list alongside names like Matt Damon and Cillian Murphy, both of whom have become recurring fixtures in his casts. Whether that admiration translates into an actual project remains to be seen, but Nolan’s comments suggest the door is very much still open.

Nolan’s praise for Bale arrived alongside another notable detail: he also spoke about the upcoming theatrical rerelease of ‘The Prestige,’ calling Bale’s performance in that film one of the most underrated of his career and expressing hope that new audiences will discover it. That kind of renewed attention on their earlier work only adds fuel to speculation about what a future project between the two might look like.

For now, fans will have to settle for nostalgia and the possibility that Nolan meant exactly what he said. Given how long Nolan and Bale’s partnership has been dormant, and how much both men have accomplished separately since, a reunion would arrive as one of the more anticipated pairings in recent memory.
