‘Steel Ball Run’ Countdown Begins as Netflix’s ‘Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure’ Prepares To Return to Weekly Fridays

Few anime releases have had a stranger road than ‘Steel Ball Run: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’. Netflix launched the sixth season of the long-running franchise in March with a single episode, then left fans waiting for months. Now the wait is nearly over, and the countdown is on for the story’s next big chapter.

The season adapts Part 7 of Hirohiko Araki’s manga and is set in the United States in 1890. It follows the first-ever cross-continental horse race across North America, with former jockey Johnny Joestar teaming up with the outlaw Gyro Zeppeli. The first episode, a 47-minute installment covering the 1st stage, premiered on March 19.

What followed was a rocky stretch. Netflix stayed quiet about when more episodes would arrive, which sparked fan backlash and viral boycott memes. On April 6, the streamer confirmed a split-course release with weekly episodes in the fall.

Now Netflix Anime has started counting down the final days. The account posted on X on September 20 that only 5 days remain until the 2nd and 3rd stages arrive, with new episodes weekly on Netflix from September 25. The post, which features a GIF of a jockey-style figure sprinting across a desert with a large 5 days to go message, has drawn 13.8K views, 1.1K likes, and 142 reposts.

The plan is a big one. According to the details announced at Anime Expo 2026 in early July, the next batch consists of 11 episodes covering the 2nd and 3rd stages of the race. They will stream on Fridays, bringing back the tradition of JoJo Fridays for the first time since ‘Golden Wind’.

That weekly rhythm is a notable change for the franchise on Netflix. ‘Stone Ocean’ arrived in multi-episode batches, and many fans wanted the series to return to a schedule that encourages weekly discussion. What’s On Netflix confirmed that the new episodes will not follow that batch model.

The 2nd stage covers chapters 12 through 27 of the manga, and the story then continues into the 3rd stage. That means the pace is about to pick up considerably after the single-episode opener. Fans who have waited since March will finally see the race begin in earnest.

The Anime Expo panel also revealed new trailers and character art. Mountain Tim, Funny Valentine and Hot Pants were shown for the first time, and the Japanese voice cast for those 3 characters was announced online a few hours afterward. The panel also confirmed English voice details for Johnny, Gyro, Diego Brando, Lucy Steel and Steven Steel.

The production is being handled by David Production, the studio behind earlier seasons. Series director Yasuhiro Kimura had earlier said he did not know when more episodes would be released, which added to the uncertainty around the delay. Now that the schedule is locked in, that uncertainty has finally cleared up.

For Netflix, the release is also a chance to repair some goodwill. The company faced criticism for the way it handled the announcement, and a smooth weekly run would go a long way toward fixing that. Fans will be watching closely to see how the rollout goes.

Whatever the outcome, the anticipation is undeniable. After months of silence and memes, the excitement around the return of Johnny and Gyro is running high. Friday can’t come soon enough for the JoJo community.
