‘The Odyssey’ Passes a Pixar Giant and Climbs the All-Time Domestic Chart as Nolan’s Epic Refuses To Slow Down

Summer blockbusters usually burn bright and vanish within a month. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘ has been the exception, and its box office run keeps collecting milestones long after most tentpoles have left theaters. Ten weekends into release, the adaptation of Homer’s epic poem is still moving up the charts.

The film opened on July 17 with $123.5 million domestically, Universal’s biggest R-rated opening ever. It then fell just 27% in its second weekend, when most films that open above $100 million drop by 50% or more. Variety noted that Nolan’s movie has been especially strong in IMAX, where it was the first feature shot entirely with the company’s cameras.

That durability has produced a string of records. The film passed ‘The Dark Knight’ to become Nolan’s highest-grossing release domestically, and it reclaimed the No. 1 spot globally in its eighth weekend. Universal’s $250 million budget now looks like a bargain.

The latest chapter came this weekend. According to Christopher Nolan Archives, citing analyst Luiz Fernando, ‘The Odyssey’ has officially surpassed ‘Incredibles 2’ to become the 17th highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office. It earned $4.9 million in its 10th weekend, down just 35.4%, and has now reached $609.8 million in the US, with a final run of $620 million to $630 million currently projected.

The numbers behind that milestone are remarkable. The film has now earned about 5 times its opening weekend, which is a rare feat for a big R-rated release. F*XOXO also noted that it is the first film to spend 10 straight weekends in the top 5 since ‘Zootopia 2’.

The trend is visible in the weekly figures. It dropped 4% in its eighth weekend and 45% in its ninth, then bounced back with a modest decline this time around. According to The Numbers, its theater count has shrunk from more than 3,900 to under 2,000, yet the per-theater average has held up better than many comparable titles.

Fiction Horizon also reported that the film has spent 62 consecutive days above $1 million at the domestic box office, the 5th-longest such streak in history. Those statistics show how much of the audience is still turning up. Very few movies keep that kind of consistency after two months.

Premium screens have played a huge role. IMAX extended the film’s 70mm run through September 30, stretching it to 11 weeks. That extension gives fans who want the biggest possible version of the film a little more time.

The movie’s global performance has been just as impressive. Media Play News and Variety put the worldwide total at about $1.72 billion, and earlier this month it became the first Universal film to pass $1.7 billion. It has also been credited as Universal’s highest-grossing release ever.

The competition is about to get tougher. ‘Resident Evil’ just opened to $60 million, and ‘The Odyssey’ ranked No. 4 for the weekend behind that film, ‘Practical Magic 2’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. As new releases arrive, screens will continue to disappear, though the film should still climb a little higher.

The closing stretch is where the real prize lies. A final domestic total of $620 million to $630 million would put it in even stronger company on the all-time list. It would also cement Nolan’s status as one of the few directors who can draw audiences to adult-oriented spectacle at this scale.
