One Icy ‘Lanterns’ Line Has DC Fans Rewatching John Stewart’s Jail Scene
Episode 6 of ‘Lanterns‘ pulls its lead back into the messiest chapter of his past. John’s mother lures him to rural Nebraska with a lie about Hal Jordan wanting to apologize, and the former partners reunite for the first time in a decade. Hal has returned to the scene of his downfall after years in federal prison, and he’s still the same charming troublemaker.
Things go sideways quickly. After John lands in trouble with the locals, Kerry locks him in the town jail, and that’s where he finally comes face-to-face with Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion. Guy isn’t eager to help, and he says he can’t help solve a murder because of what he calls bad optics.
The line in question is short and brutal: John tells Guy that everything he has is because John didn’t take it. It works as both a reminder and a guilt trip, and it pushes Guy into bringing back Hal’s decommissioned ring so John can bury him with it. The moment lands hard because it flips the power balance while John is literally standing behind bars.

The recaps back that up. The Ringer noted that Guy takes shots at John for damaging the Green Lantern brand, but falls silent once John reminds him of an undeniable truth. Fillion’s own take, per Variety, is that the exchange leaves Guy beholden to someone for the first time in his life.

For fans, the contrast is what makes it sing. Guy first appeared as Earth’s Green Lantern in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, where he came across as a cocky, swaggering presence. One reply under the post captured the mood, saying it’s wild to see Guy speechless after how he was portrayed in that movie.

The consequences of the exchange ripple through the rest of the episode. Guy also reveals that there has been a prison break in space and that Sinestro has gotten out. Back in Nebraska, John digs up Hal’s coffin after the funeral, using the ring to activate a sentry protocol so Hal’s holographic backup can help him solve the murder.
It all points to a series that is comfortable letting its DCU characters clash instead of simply teaming up. Aaron Pierre and Fillion have already built an antagonistic dynamic that The Ringer called amusing, and this jail scene shows how much mileage the show can get from a single icy sentence. If the response online is any indication, fans are already hungry for the next round between them.
