‘Alpha Gang’ Star Chris Pine Reportedly in the Running To Become DC Studios’ New Batman

DC Studios has been steadily building out its animated slate over the past couple of years, quietly assembling ambitious projects that don’t always get the same spotlight as the studio’s live-action tentpoles. One of the more intriguing entries in that lineup has been simmering in development for a while now, finally inching closer to actually taking shape.

‘Dynamic Duo,’ the studio’s first fully animated theatrical feature, has remained something of a mystery since it was first announced, with plenty of details about its unique visual style revealed but almost nothing about who would actually voice its characters. That’s beginning to change.

According to a new report from Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, DC Studios has found its young stars for the film, and Batman himself may be joining them, with Chris Pine reportedly offered the role of the Dark Knight. The deal isn’t finalized, and other names are said to still be in the mix, but it marks the first real indication of who could be leading the project’s voice cast.

‘Dynamic Duo’ centers on the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the first two characters to take up the Robin mantle alongside Batman. Per the report, Mason Thames has been cast as Dick Grayson, with Logan Kim landing the role of Jason Todd and Marsai Martin set to voice Barbara Gordon.

Lee Pace has also reportedly been brought on to play the leader of the Red Hood gang, who serve as the film’s primary antagonists. Pine’s potential involvement as Batman would mark his first time voicing the character, though he’s no stranger to the DC universe, having previously played Steve Trevor in the ‘Wonder Woman’ films.

Despite the high-profile casting buzz, ‘Dynamic Duo’ isn’t tied to the main DC Universe timeline that Gunn has been building out with projects like ‘Superman’ and upcoming entries such as ‘The Brave and the Bold.’ The film is instead being treated as its own standalone story, similar in spirit to Matt Reeves’ separate Batman universe.

That distinction matters for anyone wondering whether Pine’s potential casting signals anything about who might eventually play a live-action Batman in the DCU proper. It doesn’t. If Pine ultimately signs on, it would almost certainly be treated as a one-off performance specific to this animated project.

‘Dynamic Duo’ has been in the works since 2024, when Reeves first spoke about his excitement to collaborate with Swaybox Studios co-founder Arthur Mintz. “I have wanted to make a film with Arthur and Swaybox for many years, and for that film to be ‘Dynamic Duo,’ an incredibly special and unique Batman and Robin story for families, is a dream,” Reeves said in a statement to Deadline at the time.

The film utilizes a distinctive animation technique known as Momo animation, blending stop-motion, CGI, and live-action performance capture under Swaybox’s direction. James Gunn and Peter Safran are producing alongside Reeves’ 6th and Idaho banner, with Michael Uslan serving as executive producer.

Whether Pine ultimately signs on remains to be seen, but his potential involvement alone has already generated plenty of buzz among fans eager to see how DC Studios approaches its first fully animated theatrical outing. With ‘Dynamic Duo’ reportedly aiming for a 2028 release, there’s still plenty of time for casting details to shift before the film reaches theaters.
