Awards season promotional circuits have a way of turning even a single red carpet appearance into a moment worth dissecting. Every look becomes a statement, every interview a chance to tease what’s coming, and few stars understand that dynamic better than Florence Pugh.

The actress has built a reputation over the years for fashion choices that feel deliberate rather than safe, often pulling from archival designer collections to make a statement that photographs just as well as it reads in a headline. Her latest red carpet moment continued that pattern in a big way.

Pugh stepped out for a special advance screening of her upcoming Netflix limited series ‘East of Eden,’ held at The London West Hollywood on September 15, wearing an archival Rodarte set that immediately became the talk of the event. The butter-yellow ensemble, pulled from Rodarte’s Spring 2017 runway show, paired a frilly cropped blouse with a high-waisted, ruffled skirt.

The outfit leaned heavily into ornate detailing, featuring tonal polka dots, winding stem embroidery, and three-dimensional floral appliqués throughout. Sheer dotted sections alternated with overlapping ruffled panels across the skirt, creating a surface that shifted between dense and translucent depending on the angle.

Pugh completed the look with silver pointed pumps and a curated mix of jewelry, including a Bvlgari Serpenti Seduttori watch, B.Zero1 rings, and Tubogas earrings, alongside Maria Tash diamond studs in marquise, drape, and star designs. The combination read as elevated but never overdone, letting the elaborate Rodarte craftsmanship remain the clear focal point of the evening.

The event doubled as the official kickoff for Pugh’s ‘East of Eden’ press tour ahead of the series’ October 1 premiere on Netflix. She stars as Cathy Ames, the manipulative antiheroine at the center of John Steinbeck’s classic novel, in a seven-episode adaptation written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the original 1955 film version.

Speaking about the challenge of bringing such a complicated character to new audiences, Pugh described the experience as genuinely nerve-wracking. “It was a character that I wrestled with in a really, really beautiful way throughout the whole shoot,” she said in an interview with Gold Derby, calling the process of bringing Cathy to life “totally terrifying.”

Pugh went on to explain just how personally invested she’s become in Cathy’s portrayal, describing a strong protectiveness over how the character comes across on screen. “I’m really, really defensive and protective of Cathy,” she said. “Part of my job is to understand these characters that I play so deeply that I could hopefully argue for them or protect them as if they were my friend.”

That sense of responsibility appears to be shared by Kazan, who set out to explore the motivations behind Cathy’s harmful decisions in ways the original novel never fully addressed. Pugh acknowledged that approach will likely divide longtime fans of the book, some of whom may resist a more sympathetic reading of a character long defined by her cruelty.

With the series’ premiere just around the corner, Pugh’s red carpet choices are likely to keep drawing attention as the promotional tour continues across multiple cities. Between the bold fashion statements and her candid comments about the role, anticipation for ‘East of Eden’ seems to be building right on schedule.
