‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Just Shattered a Box Office Record Before Anyone’s Even Seen It

Marvel has spent the past few years navigating a rocky stretch at the box office, contending with superhero fatigue and inconsistent results that left even loyal fans questioning whether the franchise’s biggest crossovers still carried the same weight. That uncertainty made the studio’s newest ensemble tentpole feel like something of a make-or-break moment heading into its holiday release.

Early signs, though, suggest audiences haven’t lost their appetite for a genuine Avengers-scale event. Ticket demand has been building steadily since presales opened back in July, with numbers climbing well beyond what analysts initially expected this far out from release.

That momentum has now translated into a genuine record. ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has crossed $55 million in domestic presales with three full months still remaining before its December 18 release, according to tracking firm Global Box Office, placing it among the fastest-selling films in box office history.

The film’s presale trajectory has been unusually front-loaded from the start. Premium-format tickets first went on sale July 20, and the movie generated $16.5 million in advance sales on its very first day across roughly 1,000 domestic theaters offering premium screenings.

Disney Senior Executive VP and CFO Hugh Johnston confirmed the $50 million milestone earlier this month at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, framing it as clear evidence of pent-up demand within the Marvel fan base. Notably, more than 70 percent of that total came from tickets tied to Infinity Vision, Disney’s newly launched premium large-format certification, giving the studio’s answer to IMAX a strong early showing before hosting a single title.

Even with its impressive early pace, ‘Doomsday’ still trails the biggest advance sales hauls in domestic box office history. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ currently holds the top spot, having racked up $150 million in advance ticket sales by the Thursday before its July release, an unprecedented figure that helped fuel its eventual record-breaking opening weekend.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ sits in second place, with industry estimates from 2019 placing its pre-opening advance sales somewhere in the $120 million to $140 million range, generally cited around $130 million. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ rounds out the top three with $78 million in advance sales ahead of its December 2021 debut.

Part of what makes ‘Doomsday’s early pace notable is the timing of its release. The film is set to open the same day as Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which secured exclusive access to IMAX screens for its opening stretch, pushing Disney to lean heavily on its own Infinity Vision format to give fans premium viewing alternatives.

That competitive backdrop makes the strength of early ticket sales even more significant. With nearly three months still to go before release, there’s plenty of room for the total to climb considerably higher, especially as marketing ramps up closer to the holiday window.

Presales alone don’t guarantee a record-breaking opening weekend, and plenty of time remains for enthusiasm to shift in either direction. Still, a $55 million advance haul this far out from release signals genuine excitement for the Russo brothers’ star-studded return to the franchise, reuniting a massive ensemble cast under the Doctor Doom-centered storyline.

Whether ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can ultimately challenge ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s dominant advance sales record remains to be seen, but its current trajectory puts it firmly in the conversation among the biggest openings in Marvel history.
