Movie marketing has increasingly become a game of meeting fans exactly where they already are online, and few recent campaigns have stumbled into a more perfect coincidence than this one. Sometimes a title and a viral internet phenomenon just happen to collide in ways no studio could have planned.

That’s essentially what’s happened with the promotional rollout for Anne Hathaway’s latest psychological thriller, which shares its name with one of this year’s most inescapable internet horror trends. Rather than ignore the unlikely overlap, the marketing team decided to embrace it directly.

Hathaway shared a new promotional clip for her upcoming film ‘Verity’ this week, directly referencing the viral Minecraft horror alternate reality game also called “Verity,” leaning into a coincidence the internet has been buzzing about for months. In the clip, Hathaway echoes the now-famous catchphrase associated with the meme’s central character, sending fans into a frenzy online.

For anyone unfamiliar with the reference, the Minecraft “Verity” phenomenon began as a horror web series and alternate reality game created by YouTuber ThatMob, centered on a Minecraft mod that introduces a floating yellow smiley-faced assistant named Verity. The character initially helps players locate nearby resources before gradually revealing itself as something far more sinister.

The series took off after debuting in late May, spawning an enormous fan community across YouTube, TikTok, and beyond. Much of that momentum was fueled by a fan-made song titled “It’s Me, It’s Verity,” released by YouTuber Horror Skunx in July, which has racked up millions of views and become something of an anthem for the trend.

Hathaway’s ‘Verity,’ by contrast, has nothing to do with Minecraft at all. Directed by Michael Showalter and based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel of the same name, the psychological erotic thriller follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer hired by bestselling author Verity Crawford’s husband under increasingly unsettling circumstances.

The film also stars Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, with Hathaway both leading and producing the project alongside Hoover herself. Filming wrapped back in April 2025, and the movie is now set for release on October 2, 2026, through Amazon MGM Studios domestically and Sony Pictures Releasing International overseas.

Online reaction to the promo has been enthusiastic, with fans flooding platforms like TikTok with reaction videos and remixes blending the meme with clips from the actual film trailer. Some viewers have pointed out that Hathaway’s delivery in the clip pulls specific phrasing directly from the Horror Skunx song rather than the film’s own marketing copy, adding another layer of meta humor to the whole moment.

With the theatrical release now just over a week away, this kind of viral crossover attention could meaningfully boost awareness for a film that might otherwise have competed for attention against a crowded fall release calendar. Whether the trend translates into actual box office numbers remains to be seen, but the online conversation alone suggests the studio’s gamble has already paid off in visibility.
